Quick Overview

Winemaker Steve Pannell talks a very interesting and relevant line about making wines that suit Australia’s ‘food culture’. His gist is that wine in Australia often forgets to be relevant to what we eat, and that wines produced from wine regions often miss cues from climate and resources in the growing areas. I tend to agree. This isn’t just about that weird, miscued term ‘food wine’, it’s about understanding what our broad brushstrokes of food totems are, and thinking about wines that match.

That this is a lighter styled red of spice and gentle sweetness, in broad brushstrokes, makes it ideal for our proclivities to dishes with chilli or south east Asian spice, or equally relevant to Australia’s love of Mediterranean foods and dishes. Good vibes.

Product Description

Tempranillo and Touriga Nacional produce some of the finest wines from the warm, dry Iberian Peninsula in Spain and are also perfectly suited to our Southern Fleurieu climate; which is why I believe they have enormous potential here. Their climatic suitability generally means fewer inputs in the vineyard and winery increasing the sustainability, improving the environment and resulting in wines with amazing depth, complexity and flavour.

Tempranillo dominant nose with heaps of black fruits, plum pudding, cocoa and wet earth overlaid with Touriga National's pungent jasmine scented florals and exotic eastern spices. Immediately juicy, luscious and silky, it is rich flavoursome wine without being heavy of cloying. The intense and tightly intertwined flavours are primarily of fresh blackberries along and plum pudding or panforte. This is the best way to describe the combination of black fruits and a complex spicy profile that includes hints of clove, nutmeg and cinnamon. The palate is long and tasty with a tannic finish that is vitally important to balance the wine richness and make it best suited to drinking with food. A plate of chorizo, jamon or salumi immediately springs to mind.

Hand-harvested, crushed, and traditionally vinified in small open-top fermenters. Malolactic fermentation in stainless steel, then transferred to old 500L French puncheons for 8 months. This youthful, vibrant and fruit driven style presents lifted fruits of cherry and raspberry, musk, violets, with a hint of anise and nutmeg. Silky and juicy. It’s a flavoursome, light-medium bodied wine. The palate is long and consistent with integrated sandy Grenache tannins that provide for a balanced finish, and a synergy with food.
