Quick Overview

...A slight tang to close distracts, would be the chat right now. Has drinkability and regional character written all over it, anyway. Good stuff here." 92 points, Mike Bennie, winefront.com.au
FOUR trophies at the McLaren Vale Wine Show  -
BEST SMALL PRODUCER - BEST SHIRAZ  - BEST SINGLE-VINEYARD SHIRAZ - BEST SHIRAZ 2016 OR YOUNGER

Product Description

The wine was fermented with wild yeasts and matured in mostly older French oak - with just one new French 500 litre puncheon in the mix - for around 12 months. This was followed by 3-4 months in tank, before being bottled in the winter without fining or filtration. The name ‘Violet Hour’ refers to the violet coloured sky under which Adrian Bondar and Selina Kelly picked the last bunches of Shiraz for their first ever release of this wine (2012).

Hand-picked from the Blewitt Springs portion of the vineyards, this wine encapsulates the Bondar style; all fragrance, juicy fruit and lightness of touch. A blend of both old and younger vines, the younger Shiraz blocks give the wine brightness on the palate and pretty aromatics, while the older vines (some up to 65 years old, fermented as whole bunches) provide the savoury complexity, depth and structure.

"Young and fresh vibe. McLaren Vale shiraz so often burdened by weight, ripeness, acid adjustment, knee jerk to season/climate and oak handling, here finding a brighter, fresher guise. Whole bunch included in the ferment. Of course, from the famed Rayner Vineyard.

Has a lushness but also sees freshness and vitality amongst the slip of dark cherry, kirsch, clove oak and mocha characters. Great perfume of kirsch, clove, brown spice and mocha too. Texture shows a softness with crisp acidity underlying. Palate is generous, but without sitting thick in the mouth, instead seeing rich fruit flavour, gentle oak seasoning and a coolness and herbal note underlying. A slight tang to close distracts, would be the chat right now. Has drinkability and regional character written all over it, anyway. Good stuff here." 92 points, Mike Bennie, winefront.com.au
