Quick Overview

Third vintage release of the affordable Calo tempranillo and it’s another goodun’. Value plus. It probably needs another 6-12 months in bottle but it’s bonza drinking once again. Glossy vanilla and bueberry. Soft. Has a bit of tannin to it. A bit of chew. Smoky, bacony, chicory length. Bloody good drinking. Gorgeously medium-weight and food friendly. 90 points Winefront

Product Description

Calo Rioja is a modern and expressive Tempranillo created by third generation winemaker Javier Murua. In the keeping with the new wave of winemaking sweeping Rioja, Javier avoids the traditional long maturation in old oak to focus on fruit vibrancy and purity.

Calo Rioja Tempranillo is sourced from Rioja Alavesa in the foothills of the Cantabrian Mountains. Rioja Alavesa is the finest sub-region of Rioja. A patchwork of small vineyards are planted in very poor, sandy soils on the lower slopes. Very low yields, along with cooler night temperatures, create wines with intensity matched by elegance and defined structures.

A bright and expressive example of Rioja, beginning with a vivid red colour with violet highlights. Aromas of red fruit and dark cherries meld with liquorice and a touch of vanilla. The palate is rich and full bodied with classic blackcurrant fruit and cherry cola fruit flavours balanced by earthy complexity and varietal dry, chalky tannins.

Love a Bargain? With a Miro-inspired label, this comes from 30-year-old bush vines and it has loads of character — on the one hand it’s rather polished and on the other it’s full of rustic charm. True to the joven style, this spent four months ageing in oak barrels. Its bouquet is of dark cherries, spice, leather and blackberries and a swallow reveals complex flavours of cherry, strawberry, raspberry, earth and nuts. Bright, light acid and fine, grippy tannins drive a savoury finish. Ben Thomas
