Babo Nero d' Avola 2013
Sicily can be such a happy hunting ground for wines that combine drinkability, interest and good value. There’s three ticks here. This is savoury and minerally, but lush with dark cherries, spice, floral top notes, and maybe a few of the old cheeky black jellybeans. Love the smooth silty tannin, pitch perfect acidity, and the light spiciness to finish. It’s only just medium bodied, almost delicate for a Nero, but gee this is good drinking. Third vintage release of the affordable Calo tempranillo and it’s another goodun’. Value plus. It probably needs another 6-12 months in bottle but it’s bonza drinking once again.
