  1. Castelli Estate Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2015

Castelli Estate Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2015

    Regular Price: $19.99

    Special Price: $19.00

    As low as: $18.00

This is a fine example of the quintessential Western Australian partnering of Sauvignon Blanc & Semillon. Light pale straw in colour. The nose is dominated by intense Sauvignon Blanc characters of passionfruit and greengage. The Semillon imparts a textured lemon zest influence and also some hints of cut grass. All of these flavours surround an intense herbaceous core. Extended lees contact and partial barrel fermentation has provided some background structure and mouthfeel with little aroma influence. This is a drier, more complex style than the typical examples of this blend, however the intense vibrancy is best enjoyed now or over the next 5 years.

    Michael Cooper
Looking for 'texture, rather than rich aromatics', winemaker James Healy and viticulturist Ivan Sutherland fermented and lees-aged their 2013 vintage (5*) Sauvignon Blanc for 18 months in seasoned French oak casks. Hand-harvested in the Dog Point Vineyard (for which 'Section 94' was the original survey title), at the confluence of the Brancott and Omaka valleys, and fermented with indigenous yeasts, it is light lemon/green, with a complex bouquet. Mouthfilling and sweet-fruited, it is poised and youthful, with lively acidity and concentrated, multi-faceted flavours, showing lovely depth and harmony. It's still developing, but already delicious.
    Arguably the best yet. -

It's such a stirringly aromatic wine, singing 'Marlborough Sauv' with a big, full and slightly sweaty nose of ripe fruit. Importantly, there a herbal edge too, a nod to what Marlborough Sauv should taste like, ie not all tropical fruit. Actually, there's no tropicals at all, which makes this (arguably) even more enjoyable. A long palate, prominent acid and yet still with plenty to come.

Palate: Full, firm and long with creamy-mineral texture. Herbaceous flavours dominate with pea shell, nettle and grass, along with underlying passionfruit and blackcurrant. Wild yeast-fermented in French barriques and aged on lees for 12 months. It offers a rare combination of elegance and complexity, the latter achieved without any funky/reductive characters, the former with a combination of citrus, white flower and tropical flavours. Still cruising.
Rating: 97 Points; Drink by: 2017; Price: $40.00; Date Tasted: Sept 2015; Alcohol: 12%; Top 100 Wines of 2015 - James Halliday; Weekend Australian

Some old French oak, wild yeast, time on lees, funk. Not your usual NZ sauvignon blanc. Excellent intensity. A tonne of wild character. Gravel, tropical fruit, sweat, earth, thistles, orange peels, sulphur. Has a slippery smooth coating to it, but pulpy passionfruity acidity refuses to be calmed. So intense it almost hurts. Excellent lingering finish. Armed and dangerous style of sauvignon blanc. In-your-face but remarkable quality. Rated : 94 Points WInefront.com.au

This wine, a modern type of French sauvignon, has intense varietal personality, suggesting tropical fruits, blackcurrants, grass and minerals. It tastes forward and fruity, refreshing and clean. Ralph Kyte-Powell

It’s cracking value. ... Tropical fruits and hay. Acidity gets a little stringy on the finish but it’s bright, flavoursome and different-enough to make you want to reach for more. Compelling in its category. Winefront.com.au

Brilliantly clear, the pale straw colour signifies how perfect our timing was. Pure Adelaide Hills aromatics leap out of the glass showing fresh cut grass characters, honeysuckle, jasmine and underlying tropical passionfruit. The journey along the palate is wondrously complex and fills the mouth with crisp melon, gooseberry and nettle, all the while maintaining a vibrant, zesty balance with Longview's hallmark of gentle refreshing acidity.

94 points. “Out of Step never seems to put a foot wrong. Boom boom. You could even say that Out of Step is a name to watch. This wine alone gives credit to that theory: it’s intense in a smooth, elegant way, its heart of barley and tropical fruit is kept tucked behind notes of gravel and woodsmoke. The thing is: picking individual flavours here is difficult. It just presents “as one”. The walls of oak and fruit are down; it’s a unified wine. The mouthfeel here has to be felt to be believed; this is super silken. In all it’s an outstanding wine.” 94 points- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Shows fruit on the offensive, a thrust of lifted passionfruit and gooseberry combined with a mineral edge. A weapon of power and elegance, with initial fruit intensity tapering cleanly on the palate to a crisp, finely honed acid point. Enjoy while young and fresh.
A fresh and lively sauvignon from one of the Hills’ masters, this has a composed amalgam of passionfruit, gooseberry, some sweet fresh herbs, grassy notes and citrus. The palate's taut and savoury, with the latter setting it apart from the majority of others in this style.

"This estate vineyard, planted '70, was acquired by SC Pannell in '14; matured in French oak (20% new). Wow. This isn't the trendy SC Pannell with aspirations to make light to medium-bodied reds for connoisseurs of fine things, but a throwback to Steve Pannell's days with Hardys (there is an explanation, but no space).

I love this wine and I love drinking it. It's been stripped back fro the artifice of winemaking to express the breadth and purity of McLaren Vale shiraz. violets, a punnet of fresh berries. It's all about the fruit, medium to full, earthy, even, long and sometimes ethereal. drink now until 2026

The Adelaide Hills is recognised as one of Australia’s finest Sauvignon Blanc growing regions: the altitude, soils and weather patterns seem to draw the best from this variety and in 2016, I was lucky enough to take fruit from one of the finest Sauvignon Blanc vineyards in the region. The 2014 Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc is exceptional. The warm, dry vintage was perfect for this variety and has resulted in a wine with intense flavour concentration, complexity and a great natural acidity.

This is one of the finest Sauvignon Blancs we have made.

A picture-perfect vintage, moderate yields ripening to perfection. Cool fermentation in stainless steel and early bottling. The wine verges on fleshy on the mid-palate then finishes with a swagger of limey acidity on the long, fresh finish. Flavours? Grapefruit and a touch of passionfruit. 12.5% alc; screwcap. 94 points; drink to 2016; $26 James Halliday
Erin Larkin 93 Points In its 26th vintage, this wine is truly exciting. It shows spicy juniper, blackcurrant, jasmine, granny smith apples, toasted lemon zest, white pepper, white currants and nashi pear. It’s made in 100% stainless steel, so not a hint of oak. Winemakers Martin Shaw and Adam Wadewitz do engage in a bit of lees stirring, so the wine is texturally interesting and has a complexity not just associated with the fruit. It has crystalline purity and is focused, tight and zingy. Drink now. Subiaco Post, 11 July 2015
