The mature Gulley View vineyard, on red loamy clay over limestone, historically supplied Leo Buring, maker of countless outstanding Rieslings in the past. The fruit is hand picked, whole-bunch pressed, fermented with a mix of indigenous and inoculated yeast and raised in stainless tanks. Crammed with mouth filling texture, stone fruit and apple notes and waterfall fresh acidity, this wine is not at all typically Clare in style; Col halts the ferment with around 7-8g/l residual sugar to balance the site's searing acidity. Just north of 200 cases of the scintillating 2016; what are you waiting for, people? Breakfast in bed?

"This is a stunning riesling. So dry, so slatey, so well fruited, so charming and so long. It’s Clare to its back teeth. Lemon-lime, florals, spice and that characteristic bath salts character.
The purity and the sheer deliciousness of the citrus flavours on offer here deserve a mention in the dictionary beside the word: gorgeous."

Textbook Eden Valley Riesling. It’s mineral with a subtle lavender perfume, spice, grapefruit and lime. Clean and direct, pure acidity and visions of mineral water flowing over stones, if you take my meaning. The finish is clean, crunchy and very long. Beautiful wine. Dead set bargain.
You could even twist my arm to rate it one point higher, maybe.

Woods Crampton Black Label Eden Riesling 2015

    Regular Price: $26.50

    Special Price: $24.50

    As low as: $24.00

"This is Black Label, which we all know means high quality and top shelf, even though it does not come in sealed plastic bag…
Slight fenugreek reduction, lime juice, white flowers and bashed rocks (or something like that). Light, tight and lime juicy, with grippy flinty texture and a particularly good finish that’s well focussed and grapefruity.
    Excellent wine. A classic mouth-watering Eden." 94 points Winefront.com.au

This Riesling couldn't be anymore youthful - it's one of the first bottled 2015 South Australian whites I've had. It's already looking a treat too, water green in colour with aromatics that you can smell halfway across the room.
    Love that joyful fruit.
Underneath there is some post-ferment banana esters, a little peachy juiciness and then a very dry edge underneath. It's fruit, not acid, motivated, with a smashable combination of gooseberry and nectarine fruit without tipping into flab. Off-dry, though it never feels awfully sweet, a trick that should be commended.
Drink this young and savour the taste of delicious fruit (like I do).

    Details:11.5%, Screwcap, $25
Best drinking: 2015-2016 (though it will live for ages after that not necessarily get better)
    Score: 17.7/20, 92/100"

A little bottle of deliciousness. I don't score, but if I did, I'd give this 96/100. Rating: 96 Points; Winsor Dobbin, Wine of the Week, January 2013.
... an extremely luscious brandy snap, cumquat, nut and tea palate. This is seriously old material; 375 ml; Rating: 94 Points; James Halliday
... it's refreshingly vibrant, balanced and without any hint of cloying sweetness. Rating: 96 Points; Tyson Stelzer; Wine Taste

One of the Barossa's greatest gifts is its unique collection of fortified port and sherry style wines. This 30 year old (average age) pedro ximinez is sensational, essentially an amontillado sherry with emerging nutty, caramel, apricot and raisin characters, bergamot and racy acidity remaining. .....Then you’re into some lavender perfume, lime and juicy lemon. It’s crunchy and very tasty – has a distinct lavender mouth perfume – sweet lime and ginger spices, chalky almost grainy feel, and a pretty long and satisfying finish. Rugged charm with good drinkability. Very easy to like. 93 points Winefront.com.au

    James Halliday's wine tasting note
Bright and chalky at once. Glitters in the glass. Scintillating lemon and bath salt flavours hit, run, and keep on going. Rindy, almost smoky characters play through the finish. Intensity impresses throughout. 94 points James Halliday

Channelling a German riesling mindset, this wine treads a tightrope-walker line between sweet and dry, begging the question almost of where the border is drawn. Here, it's just a lean towards the former, a lime sorbet feel with a faint note of green lime cordial, but edged with tempered acidity and a final sweet-sour tension. Intriguing, and suits not just the dessert course but also Thai entrees.

  3. West Cape Howe Great Southern Riesling 2016

West Cape Howe Great Southern Riesling 2016
Very clear and bright with a hint of light straw. Delicately perfumed with light floral notes. Attractive 'lemonade' aromas. Has gorgeous citrus fruit flavours and a lovely fullness without being sweet. The beautiful ripe lemon and lime flavours are complexed by the delicate floral characters, all balanced by its great natural acidity. With good mouthfeel and palate weight and a long, clean finish, this is a great example of a delicate, dry, cool climate Riesling.
