Margaret River chardonnay has a richness - no matter how early you pick it. Or so it sometimes seems. This has peachy, grapefruity grunt and yet through the finish it’s lean and lemony. Voyager Estate Chardonnay 2008
A slight whiff of tinned corn and pineapple but primarily tasting of nectarine, grapefruit and spice. Good oak treatment, juicy and flavoursome with a slight buttered nuts character, yet also tight, racy and citrine as per the modern Voyager style – the best of both worlds (although leaning towards the former in this example). Vibrant pale straw colour with a tinge of green. Subtle aromas of grapefruit, white peach, and orange blossom. Grapefruit mingling with lemon barley, brioche, and honeydew melon flavours. The palate mixes a thickness of texture with crisp acidity. Lemon zest, nectarine and a distinctly savory, almost salty cracker, type of flavour. There's plenty of things to like here, it's not too austere, oak is subtle and toned down, it's mid-weight yet of full flavour and there's a long tight flinty finish. Wheaty complexity too. . Oakridge Estate Chardonnay 2010
This is a very interesting chardonnay. It smells sweet and bubble-gummy, which if nothing else lends the wine a seductive element. It lures you in. The palate is then lean and lemony, watery in part but grapefruity too. Maybe even a touch of half-ripe nectarine. Accordingly, it gives the wine a direct, piercing shape through the mouth – before a burst of toasty, fruity, bitter flavour unleashes on the finish. It’s a wine of acts. Beginning, middle and end. It needs time, but it’s a beauty.
