.... it jumped out as irresistible. Not difficult to see why.  If you like the mainstay of Australian grenache, you will like this Spanish version. Sweet fruit, minerally tannin, dry finish. Gunsmoke. Obviously accessible but the fruit has character and class. Black and red licorice. Beautiful freshness. Energetic wine from go to whoa. You just want to drink it. Under $15? Excellent buying.  89 Points Screwcap Drink : 2013 – 2015 . Campbell Mattinson.  www.winefront.com.au
..... The big news is that it's even better than Spain's top-selling red wine in this country. It's an authentic and structured grenache which sets a dynamic contrast between blackberry, plum and liquorice fruit, subtle herbal complexity and firm, fine rustic tannins. This is declassified Campo de Borja from north-eastern Spain, not classified, because that would only make it more expensive.  90 points. A little bottle of deliciousness. I don't score, but if I did, I'd give this 96/100. Rating: 96 Points; Winsor Dobbin, Wine of the Week, January 2013.
... an extremely luscious brandy snap, cumquat, nut and tea palate. This is seriously old material; 375 ml; Rating: 94 Points; James Halliday
... it's refreshingly vibrant, balanced and without any hint of cloying sweetness. Rating: 96 Points; Tyson Stelzer; Wine Taste

One of the Barossa's greatest gifts is its unique collection of fortified port and sherry style wines. This 30 year old (average age) pedro ximinez is sensational, essentially an amontillado sherry with emerging nutty, caramel, apricot and raisin characters, bergamot and racy acidity remaining. Adelina Eternal Return Arneis 2016

    Regular Price: $25.00

    Special Price: $23.99

    As low as: $23.00

This fleshy Arneis is made from a measly few rows rooted in the Bowe Lees vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, 390mt above sea level. If you like your Arneis in the crisp, nutty/pear aperitif guise, look away now. Arneis means "little rascal" in the Piedmontese dialect and this seriously savoury/earthy rendition of site and grape lives up to that name. With swathes of spicy, yellow plum and fuzzy peach fruit, and a chewy, phenolic-edged grip to finish off, there is nothing simple or sedate about this delicious wine. In spite of the extract-rich palate (given even more bass by 20 per cent indigenous fermentation in neutral oak) the wine remains zingy and super refreshing, encouraging you to have another glass, or three.

Subtle white flower/vanilla bean perfume, fennel, stones, and mixed citrus (including tangerine) leads you in to a wine of immediate appeal and character. It’s lean and kind of bony, but delivers a lovely crunch of citrus, zinging but fine acidity, and a fine talc-like texture, which lends a lovely grip to the wine. Yum. Will cellar surely, I’d imagine."

Here’s a juicier style of Watervale. Pretty, perfumed, green apples, white flowers, vanilla and the like. Has firm but clean acidity, offset by gentle sweetness of lime and apple. Finish is chalky – almost open weave in texture – and quite long. Suggestion of aniseed in the aftertaste. May carry a touch of residual sugar? but the overall effect is thoroughly charming." Rated : 93 Points Winefront.com.au

An example of a master winemaker of Semillon at play with a great vineyard and a great vintage. The expectation was sky high, but easily cleared by this beautiful Semillon, with its gleaming rivulets of polished lemon and honeydew melon, its balance already wondrous, its length impeccable. Drink it tonight or 20 years hence. 97 Points
..... This is so delicious on release that it’s almost possible to forget its age-worthiness. It’s intensely, limey – almost kaffir lime – with zippy lemon and pebbly minerality. A hint of salinity and a suggestion of spice. Unwavering focus, a juicy core of flavour and excellent extension. Will offer much pleasure now and later. 96 Points

Rating 94 points - James Halliday's wine tasting note - Clones 76, 95 and Mendoza, wild yeast solids fermentation in French puncheons (25% new), partial mlf and 9 months maturation. Skilled winemaking has left the wine bright and crisp, not in sauvignon blanc territory; it is light-bodied, but white peach and grapefruit varietal flavours hold the floor, not oak or vanilla pod mlf.      fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks to retain freshness & purity. Fresh pear and spice aromas combined with lychees and lemon zest provide plenty of charatcer, further enhanced by nuances of nougat, marzipan and almonds.

This delicate wine shows all the spice and perfume we expect from cool climate Pinot Gris. Nashi, ginger and rosewater perfume leads to a rich and textured palate with nutty complexity from the barrel ferment component, finishing crisp, fresh and balanced

“Adelaide Hills chardonnay grown at 400 metres. Fermented wild. Matured in French oak, 20% new, for nine months prior to bottling. Some malo, some not. It’s light-ish in some ways but it’s ever-so-attractive. Lemon, nectarine and pear flavours float across the tongue, the texture just-so, the acidity neatly contained within the fruit and yet offering plenty of refreshment.
It looks bright in the glass and feels bright in the mouth. It’s still building, still findings its way in the world, but for length, balance and mouthfeel it has it going on.”

Full-bodied and full-flavoured. Lots of oak on offer here, spicy and cedary both, with grapefruit and fleshy yellow stone fruits to the fore. There’s a trace of funk and plenty of mouthfeel. It looks (colour-wise) reasonably advanced but other than it being a bigger style, it presents as fresh. It evolves well as it rests in the glass too. It all seems a bit too much at first but in the end, you’d have to say this performs pretty well.

This is a fine example of the quintessential Western Australian partnering of Sauvignon Blanc & Semillon. Light pale straw in colour. The nose is dominated by intense Sauvignon Blanc characters of passionfruit and greengage. The Semillon imparts a textured lemon zest influence and also some hints of cut grass. All of these flavours surround an intense herbaceous core. Extended lees contact and partial barrel fermentation has provided some background structure and mouthfeel with little aroma influence. This is a drier, more complex style than the typical examples of this blend, however the intense vibrancy is best enjoyed now or over the next 5 years.

One sip and I was hooked. This is dangerously good. It’s the kind of chardonnay so many of us are looking for. Rich with flavour, sizzling with acidity, purring with length – and yet, all the while, harmonious. It’s complex without making a big deal of it.

Dexter Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay  is bright, pale lemon-gold, green tinged. Still a little shy to sniff, but there are hints of stone fruits. The palate is tightly contained by citrusy, grapefruity acidity, showing stone fruits, fig and its ripe and mouth-filling, held in balance by that refreshing acidity. Although there is 20% new oak, that component is background material along with suggestions of nutty, mealy complexity. This is a complex wine that wants more time; I’d suggest leaving it for another six to twelve months, from when it will repay amply that order of patience.

    Michael Cooper
Looking for 'texture, rather than rich aromatics', winemaker James Healy and viticulturist Ivan Sutherland fermented and lees-aged their 2013 vintage (5*) Sauvignon Blanc for 18 months in seasoned French oak casks. Hand-harvested in the Dog Point Vineyard (for which 'Section 94' was the original survey title), at the confluence of the Brancott and Omaka valleys, and fermented with indigenous yeasts, it is light lemon/green, with a complex bouquet. Mouthfilling and sweet-fruited, it is poised and youthful, with lively acidity and concentrated, multi-faceted flavours, showing lovely depth and harmony. It's still developing, but already delicious.

It's such a stirringly aromatic wine, singing 'Marlborough Sauv' with a big, full and slightly sweaty nose of ripe fruit. Importantly, there a herbal edge too, a nod to what Marlborough Sauv should taste like, ie not all tropical fruit. Actually, there's no tropicals at all, which makes this (arguably) even more enjoyable. A long palate, prominent acid and yet still with plenty to come.

Freycinet is quite a remarkable winery. Hit after hit.  This has body and complexity but it's the length through the finish that really impresses. "I'm really liking the 2016 Rieslings from South Australia. This wine had been opened two days earlier (I’ve been away) and my wife reliably informs me that it’s much better now. I trust her judgement entirely. Girls are most often better at tasting wine than men, though they seem to lack the ‘Train Spotter’ gene which is responsible for the sometimes obsessive collector mentality found in many males. Offered as a broad generalisation/observation, of course.

Beautiful perfume here – blossoms, lime and green apple – leading into a lean yet curiously flavoursome palate featuring a fine acidity, and very appealing slate and brick dust texture. Super length, finishing with a real lemonade tang (the intensity of flavour meant here, rather than sweetness). Smashing."

How powerful can a wine be before it loses its elegance? This tests the definition. It’s straw-coloured and powerfully flavoured and yet it floats and sings in harmony. It’s an elegant portrait of this wonderful white grape. It’s juicy with ripe nectarine and white peach, comes dripping with pear and fig, and cuts long with spicy, flinty, nutty goodness. There’s a rind-like character here, an extra bite to the flavour. It’s the icing on a gorgeous wine.
