An exotic red blend that offers so much complexity at this price! Beautifully made blend of Grenache Cinsault, Mataro - Lifted and fragrant with aromas of crushed raspberries and spice perfumes, wood spice, peppercorns, sandalwood and dark roses overlay tart red plum and cherry fruits. The medium bodied palate displays intense spice, red plum and dark cherry flavours. Bright and lively, this wine is characterized by fresh, cherry-like perfumes, moderate alcohol and balanced acidity. This is sweet, light-flavoured and licoricey with a raspberried underpinning and the odd earthen note.
Papillon is bottled towards the end of the year of vintage. Made from old vine Grenache and Cinsualt, the aim is to create a wine that is all about freshness, fruit and spice, a wine that is bright and alive. Winemaker Pete Schell's tasting notes: Bright and ruby hued. Very aromatic and lively, red cherry, raspberry, cassis and rose hip fruit aromatics and deeper spice and herbal notes - tarragon, aloe, sandle-wood, mace, pink pepper corn and musk.
Fresh mid weight palate with a bright raspberry and bay leaf flavors on attack that turn darker and herbier on the finish - pomegranate, curry leaf, slate. Pulpy, snappy, fine chalky tannin. More-ish.
Bright and brilliant, ruby hued. Shows the character of the 2010 Barossa vintage clearly; very aromatic and bright, lifted cherry, red currant and spicy raspberry fruit are overlaid with pot-pouri like dried flower, exotic herb and dried wood spice notes - perfumed. With time in the glass reveals subtle warm earthy notes of beetroot, subtle white pepper and caraway like spice. Distinctly medium weight on the palate with a lovely line of acidity and light, slightly sappy, fresh tannin dryness. Red plum, red currant and cherry flavours on attack.
Light but bright colour; how much the wine owes to winemaker Peter Schell's skills and how much to the (old) vines doesn't matter, for the wine has great vibrancy and energy to the red berry fruits of its grenache/cinsaut blend. 92 points James Halliday
