Maybe a little syrupy through the middle (a common characteristic in ’12 Margs Cab), but tightens up nicely with grainy oak and then grippy tannins. A new world order for Leeuwin Cabernet, it’s long and quite modern, the length befitting the label. What a step up! Best drinking: 2020-2035. 18/20, 93/100. 13.5%, $68. Would I buy it? Product Description

A concentrated and rich bouquet of ripe blackcurrants and juicy black cherries. Underlying bay leaf, fresh tobacco, anise, clove and cumin enhances the nose with varietal lift and complexity, while floral nuances of lavender and violets add perfume and fragrance.
An intense and well-appointed palate. Ripe currants and black forest fruits are abundant, with textures and layers that fold and intertwine. Dustiness, anise and cocoa characters complement the fruit, which is aligned with a lively acid structure, leading to a seamless tannin profile.


"An excellent vintage at Leeuwin Estate with Cabernet being one of the standout varietals. Spring and early summer were warm and fine with few rainy days. Berries began to veraise in very late December and early January. In January 40 mm of rain allowed the unirrigated vineyards to get a much needed deep drink enabling stress free ripening in the consistently warm and above average temperatures that followed in February and early March. In late March temperatures cooled off allowing the Cabernet to hang on the vine and develop wonderful varietal intensity. Vinification: After individual berry sorting and cold soaking, fermentation took place in closed and open fermenters at temperatures up to 30C with extraction by pumping over each individual lot three times daily. After malolactic fermentation entirely in barrels and 9 months of barrel ageing, separate parcels were blended for further maturation in French Bordelaise coopered barriques with seasonal rackings. This wine spent a total of 23 months in oak. % Varietal: 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Malbec" - Leeuwin Estate.
