Quick Overview

The wines seem a little more cloudy, but fine, as an observation. Raspberry rope, rhubarb and ginger and assorted exotic spices, new leather and floral perfume. Medium to full bodied, lovely fleshy chalky tannin and even acidity – mouthfeel is really enjoyable in its rustic unpolished style. Red berries and savoury meaty flavours with a long dry tannic finish. Shows a minor amount of warmth, but really no quibbles here.
Excellent. 92+ points Winefront.com.au

Product Description

Grenache has long been held in high regard in McLaren Vale as a versatile  variety wonderfully suited to the Vales's coastal climate. Once planted for use in fortified wines, Grenache is now been given the respect it deserves as a soft, elegant wine that pairs beautifully  with food. Planted on the Eastern facing slope below the winery, our Grenache enjoys a sunny aspect, often tempered by a cooling afternoon sea breeze.

Fermented in the original open top fermenters and Basket Pressed, the Grenache spends a short time in large oak barrells. The result is an elegant, juicy Grenache with a bright sweet/savoury palate. Gentle tannins and a fleshy palate give Grenache a  soft and generous mouth feel. This old timer of the Vale is enjoying it's time back in the spot light.

Vibrant ruby in colour, the 2012 Basket Pressed Grenache is medium bodied with a lush bouquet of violets, sour cherries and blood red plums. The soft, fresh fruits continue onto a rich, round palate with sublime tannins. All this supported by a fine acid backbone that leads to a juicy finish.

Andy Coppard, winemaker at Kays is really letting these wines sing. Maybe they’re made a bit more ‘hands off’? The wines seem a little more cloudy, but fine, as an observation.
