  1. Gran Sasso Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC (full case buy only)

Gran Sasso Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC (full case buy only)

    Regular Price: $11.50

    Special Price: $11.00

Blood plum, nuts, licorice and some chocolate on a middle weight palate that delivers plenty of flavour along with attractive chewiness and freshness. The length is particularly impressive and closes with a desirable Italianate bitterness, like chicory or similar. Is it the best release of Gran Sasso to date? I suspect so. I defy you to find a more interesting, savoury wine with modest alcohol and food friendliness at the price. If you do, please let me know. It’s ever so slightly better than a 90 point wine ... 2. Hewitson Baby Bush Mourvedre 2012

    Hewitson Baby Bush Mourvedre 2012
    $28.99

92 Points, Value: good - A satisfying, uncomplicated, old school red. Plum jam, custard and earthy aromas mark a medium-bodied, long-flavoured wine, balanced nicely by grainy tannins. Ageing? Drink over five years. Food ideas: Cevapcici; cheese and spinach pie. Ralph Kyte-Powell, The Age, Good Food, Wine Guide, March 2014

This wine is incredibly exciting with a huge range of exotic florals and spices in the bouquet. I see hints of cinnamon or the richer cousin Cassia bark. Initially it has a broody dark berry tone and then lifts with some delicate floral notes like the roses grandpa used to obsessively tend; dark ruby rose. The palate explodes like the fruit of a pomegranate with a nice tang linking in with the gravelly tannins. It's like a locomotive on the palate, it keeps building steam. Great vitality and perfume!

Longview Boat Shed Nebbiolo Rose 2012

Even served with a decent chill it’s still revving to get its charms across – within a strict, structured framework. Roses, strawberries, tobacco, licorice. Touch of alcohol warmth. Opens up nicely as it rests in the glass. Excellent buying option. Rated : 91 Points Winefront.com.au

Vigne del Vulture Aglianico Pipoli DOC

..Intriguing. Blood and blood plum, rose oil, hazelnut, bitter herb and chocolate. It’s dry and chewy with a fair whack of chalky tannin but has the fruit and density to pull it off with style. Good to drink, interesting to taste…and ripping value to boot. Love it. Drink : 2010 - 2014 90 points Learn More

Deep red in colour, the nose is rich with perfectly ripened dark blackberry, elderberry and cassis fruit. The palate is medium bodied, but intense with coffee and vanilla characters adding to the dark fruit. The finish is long and textured with fine, grainy grape tannins. This wine will reward careful cellaring and we recommend decanting before drinking.

Third vintage release of the affordable Calo tempranillo and it’s another goodun’. Value plus. It probably needs another 6-12 months in bottle but it’s bonza drinking once again. Glossy vanilla and bueberry. Soft. Has a bit of tannin to it. A bit of chew. Smoky, bacony, chicory length. Bloody good drinking. Gorgeously medium-weight and food friendly. 90 points Winefront

  2. SC Pannell Grenache 2012

    SC Pannell Grenache 2012

    Regular Price: $49.99

    Special Price: $48.50

An extraordinary, highly perfumed wine with an assortment of heady aromas of musk , Turkish delight and dried woody herbs. Being a cooler vintage, the fruit is lively and fresh with youthful, juicy, concentrated characters of pomegranate and morello cherry . This Grenache has an elegant, medium body with a sustained, savoury finish, and all-important fine, proud tannins that complete the palate.

  3. Ruggabellus Archaeus 2013

    Ruggabellus Archaeus 2013

A lick of dried herbs, tar and black olives too. Complex perfume. Inviting. Fleshiness in texture, briary and red-fruited, some more tar and floral character, chewy and puckering with talc-stone tannins. Firm finish, but upfront some more generosity. Feels pretty untamed as yet, but still compelling to drink.
Such unchartered waters. 93 points Mike Bennie Winefront.com.au"
