  1. Head Wines the Old Vine Grenache 2014

Head Wines the Old Vine Grenache 2014

    Regular Price: $39.00

    Special Price: $37.50

    As low as: $35.00

The Barossa Old Vine Charter declares Old Vine to be anything 35 years or older. This is that, and more, being 73 years old and from a vineyard near Krondorf.  20% whole bunch and spent 12 months in a 20 year old 2500L foudre. So many numbers, and luckily they all add up to something great.

Sweet cherries and raspberry, spice, smoked meat, peanuts in their shells, dried flowers and a pleasant kind of sweatiness. Light to medium bodied, confusingly feels succulent and bony at the same time, has a gentle sweetness of red berry fruit, yet a dry stony texture to its fine grained tannin. Lovely clean length.
    Complex.
Light on its feet. Beautiful to drink. It’s how you make Grenache sing. 95 Points Winefront.com.au

Dark cherry red, light purple rim. Black cherry, toasted pinenut and thyme. Dark cherries, blackberry, raspberry licorice. Light fruit weight, quite tart, with woody herbs, a hint of aniseed, fine tannins and red earth. This is a young style, which is clean, juicy and simple. Hugh Hamilton ‘The Mongrel’ Sangiovese Blend 2014

    Regular Price: $23.99

    Special Price: $22.99

    As low as: $21.99

Sangiovese is a grape that has a lot going for it. Think savoury, meaning it’s great with food; it has a cherry flavour which is a contrast to most other grapes we grow and it holds very good tannin structure. Its natural acidity means it always has an interesting and lively palate. However, if you really want to make this wine ‘sing’ it needs a little touching up with something else. In this vintage we reckoned a little dash of Shiraz did the trick. This is why we call it The Mongrel. The Shiraz added a hint of spice; it filled out the palate and it softened the tannins whilst keeping all the vitality of the Sangiovese.

In beautiful condition and shape. It tastes beautiful. Raspberry, blueberry and blackberry, no alarms or surprises, complemented by woody spice and fine, smoky oak. Everything is where it should, and where you'd hope, it to be. 94 points James Halliday

Excellent - "...When young it typically shows fresh redcurrant, blackberry and espresso aromas, supple textures, underlying savoury notes and plenty of flavour length. With age it develops greater fruit complexity and buoyant richness." Langton's Classification of Australian Wine VI, 1 May 2014 Learn More

Kalleske Clarrys Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2016

    Regular Price: $23.50

    Special Price: $21.99

    As low as: $21.00

This wine is a delightful purple red colour. The nose is fabulous, dark plums, blackberries, blueberries, with a slight dusting of icing sugar, exotic spices, and a savoury earthiness all mingled together. The palate is not a let down it's absolutely delicious, that plummy blackberry fruit, mingled with dark raspberries, pure fruited, long and lively. It has a real creaminess to the palate, great length, and really really fine tannins on the finish. The oak is well in the background, leaving all that wonderful organic fruit to do the work.
Given all the above, the wine is actually wonderfully medium bodied, as this style should be. This wine tastes like it should be $30 or more a bottle, it's that good. It is easily the best all of this line yet, and should become your house wine. Gavin Trott

Well structured, this is a complex and well balanced wine with fruit at the fore but background oak in support. Generous in flavour, it’s completed by a very lengthy finish. Moppa 2014 is an expressive Shiraz that can be enjoyed now or will cellar well in the medium to long term.

Greenock Shiraz is deep purple-black in colour. Bright and lifted, the bouquet displays characters of blackberry, cherry, fruit cake, ripe plum, mocha and oriental spice. These ripe black fruit flavours continue to the powerfully flavoured full-bodied palate.
Driven by intense fruit purity, the palate is complimented with subtle oak barrel
characters. The wines seem a little more cloudy, but fine, as an observation. Raspberry rope, rhubarb and ginger and assorted exotic spices, new leather and floral perfume. Medium to full bodied, lovely fleshy chalky tannin and even acidity – mouthfeel is really enjoyable in its rustic unpolished style. Red berries and savoury meaty flavours with a long dry tannic finish. Shows a minor amount of warmth, but really no quibbles here.

Distinct Aussie bushwalk scents of earth, eucalyptus, wet leaves, sweet paperbark bark. There’s dark berries and plum going on, but it’s that savoury lift that defines the wine. Medium weight, glossy in texture, crisp acidity lending a freshness as the sweet slick of red-black fruit glides across the palate. There’s leafy notes through the wine, light sandy tannins, and it finishes with a little saline character. All up, it’s a bright, flavoursome wine, with fine structure; an easy wine to come at and drink or cellar. Bewdy. "93 points Winefront.com.au

The perfume gives you a hint, in a way, with cinnamon and earth-dusted ripe red fruit character and a hint of dried herbs. Ripe and generous as the fruit is, it's a compelling drink, layered in flavour and generous without being overbearing. It finishes with a dusty lick of pucker and a tickle of briny acidity. It's lovely to drink, but structurally is quite loose-knit.

How much flavour can you expect from a red wine at this near rock bottom price? When it comes to nero d’Avola (the black grape of Avola, a town in eastern Sicily, and the island’s most widely planted variety), the answer is far more than you might expect. Sealed with a screwcap and from a good vintage, the Lamura may be made in big volumes, but it is exactly the type of spicy, soft-tannined Mediterranean red that shows the promise of modern Sicilian vino. .....But now, over lunch, it really impresses. A slow burner. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, it spent 21 months in 40% new wood. What’s noticeable is the even ripeness "in this 2012 vintage – no leather and gumleaf! It’s so much more generous than previous years, with plenty of purple in there. Maybe a little syrupy through the middle (a common characteristic in ’12 Margs Cab), but tightens up nicely with grainy oak and then grippy tannins. A new world order for Leeuwin Cabernet, it’s long and quite modern, the length befitting the label. What a step up! Best drinking: 2020-2035. 18/20, 93/100. 13.5%, $68. Would I buy it? I enjoyed my few glasses. I’d be happy to have some in the cellar." Andrew Graham Australian Wine Review

a classic vintage throughout much of Europe and Veneto was no exception. The vineyards began with excellent soil moisture levels and the vines responded well to ideal spring conditions before a very warm, dry summer slowed growth and limited yields. A warm , clear Autumn provided excellent ripening but crucially cool nights ensured the retention of naturally acidity. The wines are surprisingly fresh and aromatic with excellent depth of flavour.

Pale and delicate in colour with subtle citrus and floral aromas. The palate is elegant and delightfully fresh with delicate citrus and tropical flavours building to notes of ripe pear matched by soft mineral acidity before a dry finish.
