La Vendetta Barbera Sangiovese

Regular Price: $20.00

Special Price: $18.00

As low as: $17.00

A steal at the price. Importer: Fourth Wave Wine It works best as a quaffer but quality-wise it’s better than that. Beautiful fruit. Clean savouriness. Tastes of black cherries, spice, and peanut oil. Ferrous aromatics. Builds in the glass. I wouldn’t age it but I’d buy a case of this for drinking over the next year in a heartbeat. As comfortable as your favourite pair of slippers, Bernoota is just so reliable. Ripe fruit flavours and aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant and mulberry are neatly framed by a well measured touch of oak and a just right level of tannin.

LaMoresca Vino Rosso 2012

Regular Price: $50.00

Special Price: $39.99

The perfume gives you a hint, in a way, with cinnamon and earth-dusted ripe red fruit character and a hint of dried herbs. Ripe and generous as the fruit is, it's a compelling drink, layered in flavour and generous without being overbearing. It finishes with a dusty lick of pucker and a tickle of briny acidity. It's lovely to drink, but structurally is quite loose-knit.
Enjoyable. 92 points Winefront.com.au

Lamura Nero d'Avola DOC (full case buy only)

Regular Price: $16.00

Special Price: $14.99

How much flavour can you expect from a red wine at this near rock bottom price? When it comes to nero d’Avola (the black grape of Avola, a town in eastern Sicily, and the island’s most widely planted variety), the answer is far more than you might expect. Sealed with a screwcap and from a good vintage, the Lamura may be made in big volumes, but it is exactly the type of spicy, soft-tannined Mediterranean red that shows the promise of modern Sicilian vino. The palate is fresh, clean, fruit driven and dry

Leeuwin Estate Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Regular Price: $71.00

Special Price: $68.50

As low as: $65.00

.....But now, over lunch, it really impresses. A slow burner. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, it spent 21 months in 40% new wood. What’s noticeable is the even ripeness "in this 2012 vintage – no leather and gumleaf! It’s so much more generous than previous years, with plenty of purple in there. Maybe a little syrupy through the middle (a common characteristic in ’12 Margs Cab), but tightens up nicely with grainy oak and then grippy tannins. A new world order for Leeuwin Cabernet, it’s long and quite modern, the length befitting the label. What a step up! Best drinking: 2020-2035. 18/20, 93/100. 13.5%, $68. Would I buy it? I enjoyed my few glasses. I’d be happy to have some in the cellar." Andrew Graham Australian Wine Review

Really lovely rose and dried herb perfume, spice, raspberry and cherry. It’s just medium bodied, with firm fine grained tannin, gently earthy savoury flavours playing with those high toned florals and red fruits. Pulls dry and grainy on the finish, but
never loses its charm and high drinking appeal. 94 points Winefront.com.au"

Mandoleto Nero d'Avola Terre Siciliane (Case Buy)

Regular Price: $15.00

Special Price: $13.50

Black jellybeans stuffed in leather pants, dark cherry, iron filings, damp earth, sweet dried herbs. Medium bodied, clean acidity, cherry and blackcurrant, light but grainy chalky tannin and pretty decent length. A little gamey, perhaps, but such a good drinking wine.
Recommended unconditionally. Drink now.

....  the palate is a lively mix of berries and savoury tannins with lively acidity. Not surprisingly it’s easy to drink with a spicy imprint on the finish. Another impressive import with bags of bright personality that begs for food. WiningPom

Mandoleto Pinot Grigio (Case Buy)

Regular Price: $15.00

Special Price: $13.00

a classic vintage throughout much of Europe and Veneto was no exception. The vineyards began with excellent soil moisture levels and the vines responded well to ideal spring conditions before a very warm, dry summer slowed growth and limited yields. A warm , clear Autumn provided excellent ripening but crucially cool nights ensured the retention of naturally acidity. The wines are surprisingly fresh and aromatic with excellent depth of flavour.

Pale and delicate in colour with subtle citrus and floral aromas. The palate is elegant and delightfully fresh with delicate citrus and tropical flavours building to notes of ripe pear matched by soft mineral acidity before a dry finish.

Maretti Barbera Nebbiolo (Full case buy)

Dark brick red in colour  with crimson highlights. The nose is already expressive and inviting with a complex array of fresh red fruits, dried herbs, forest undergrowth and aniseed. The palate is medium to full bodied, driven by core of supple raspberry and dark plum flavours courtesy of the Barbera. Nebbiolo adds structure and length alongside fine tannins. Enjoy in its youth with a wide range of rich Italian dishes.

Maretti Langhe Rosso 2015

... It really needs a couple of years at least to show itself properly. It tastes of peanut shells, dark cherries, leather, anise, chinotto, various dried herbs. It’s juicy and well balanced but stern and tannic through the finish. I wasn’t sure at first; when I came back a couple of hours later, I was certain. This is fabulous value. Massena Mataro 2013

Mataro is not an easy variety to handle on its own, tending to be bolshie. Here a top site and experienced winemaking has harnessed its power, providing a full-bodied palate that is still well balanced, and sultry black fruits side-step the tannins with a little bit of help from the oak maturation.

Passopisciaro Etna Rosso 2013

Bright red fruits like strawberry and raspberry, dusted with pepper, earth and ferrous character right through its core, fine gravelly tannin, punchy fresh acidity, and again freshness and a lick of kitten’s tongue tannin on a long finish. When you leave it in the glass for a while, some liquorice richness comes through.
Has the lightness of Pinot Noir, and the grip of Barbaresco, but of course it’s just really good Nerello Mascalese. From Mount Etna. 95 points Gary Walsh Winefront.com.au

Paxton AAA McLaren Vale Shiraz Grenache 2015

Regular Price: $20.50

2015 AAA - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front It’s a throaty expression of Shiraz Grenache, ....it delivers 100% flavour. Blackberry and raspberry, some liquorice and chocolate, leather and gamey aromas. It’s full bodied, saturated with flavour and fine grained tannins, feels aglow with alcohol, but holds it together and finishes long and savoury. Hearty wine.

A 65/35% blend, matured in French barriques. Complex, rich and layered, black and red fruits provide the mosaic of flavours. The tannin and oak management can’t be faulted.

Pipoli Il Passo Nerello Mascalese Nero D’Avola 2015

A rich, dark and mellow Sicilian red with cherry and blueberry fruit, framed by cedar and gently spicy oak. Vibrant and juicy with good length.

No review available yet, below is the review of the previous vintage, the 2014! I think the 2015is better, but not yet reviewed.

"I picked up a bottle of this in a supermarket while on holiday. I’d not seen it before. It was one of those Japanese supermarkets where everything looked either exciting or frightening or both. Once spotted, I didn’t hesitate. Had no idea what an appropriate price is, or indeed what it’s quality would be like.

If you see this in a shop anywhere; clear them out. It’s a beautiful, intriguing, tangy, sweet-but-serious wine at a snip of a price. Buy a dozen. Buy two. It’s rusty and redcurrranty, redolent of ripe raspberries, fractionally herbal and chalky but lively, scented, structured, the kit and the caboodle. It’s light and it’s lovely. $20-ish? I’m in." Rated : 92 Points Winefront.com.au

Samuels Gorge Graciano 2015

Regular Price: $41.99

Special Price: $41.00

An ‘old world’ Spanish variety, Graciano is prized for its spiciness, acidity and tannin, and our 2015 delivers on all fronts. Lifted aromas of maple wood, baked rhubarb and sun dried tomato allure the senses. The surprisingly delicate palate is awash with bush pepper and vibrant acidity, finishing with fine, chalky tannins. A joven style, this vintage will cellar for around 5 years and will pair beautifully with cured meat and cheese boards, and for a treat, try it with toasted crostini topped with baked fig, Manchego cheese and caramelised shallots.

The nose shows concentrated red fruit characters, strawberry, red liquorice, cherry primary fruit aromas mixed with fennel seed and black liquorice notes from Shiraz, completed by spicy, cinnamon, allspice notes, creates vibrant concentrated primary fruit aromatics with subtle spice and savoury notes adding to complexity. The wine is full and broad on the palate with juicy red fruit character up front, and the finish is firm due to fine-grained, dusty tannins which add length and complexity from the spicy/savoury notes of Shiraz and Touriga. There's great balance between primary fruit notes and savoury/spice complexity, and the intensity of pure, fresh fruit is particularly impressive.

Winemaker Steve Pannell talks a very interesting and relevant line about making wines that suit Australia’s ‘food culture’. His gist is that wine in Australia often forgets to be relevant to what we eat, and that wines produced from wine regions often miss cues from climate and resources in the growing areas. I tend to agree. This isn’t just about that weird, miscued term ‘food wine’, it’s about understanding what our broad brushstrokes of food totems are, and thinking about wines that match.

That this is a lighter styled red of spice and gentle sweetness, in broad brushstrokes, makes it ideal for our proclivities to dishes with chilli or south east Asian spice, or equally relevant to Australia’s love of Mediterranean foods and dishes. Good vibes.
