Forester Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Regular Price: $26.50

Special Price: $24.99

Sitting where I sit, it’s easy lately to forget that wines like this exist. This is really clean crisp Cabernet from one of the places on Earth it grows best.

It’s all coffee and cocoa and mocha, cedary oak and blueberries, musk and faint lavender and violets, clean as a whistle and ready to swell and turn and glower with a decade in a good cellar. Once again made after the old (1950s) Penfolds open fermenters/temperature control/pumpover method, it delivers a similar result at just a bit of the price of their best.

As it plays around in your mouth, its slender and sinuous form does that magical transformation from silky and elegant viscosity to velvet, with the right level of acid and drying fine-grained tannins sorting all the slick stuff out, letting them all trickle through the organoleptic division in the right order at the right pace.

Right now I’m loving it with crumbly sheep’s cheese, lemon juice, basil and black pepper on dark rye. I could drive myself nuts dreaming of having it with simply grilled lamb cutlets, pink and dribbling, and mash. It makes your cheeks leak; opens the salvaries till they gush.

Maybe too clinically bright for the dirty-arse funkster fanatics, it’s a damn good reflection of the noble Cabernet at its arrogant, aromatic best. Regardless of the politics, I can’t imagine anybody refusing a glass." 93+ Points

Glaetzer the Wallace GSM 2013

Regular Price: $21.99

Special Price: $19.99

As low as: $19.00

Fresh and floral, with a dusting of pepper over blue and black fruits, and maybe some liquorice. Medium to full bodied, open weave grainy tannin, fresh black fruit and mocha, with an almost Ribena juiciness to it. Slight peppery character and fractionally too perky acidity, but has precision and excellent drive through the palate. Pretty good length too. 91 points Winefront.com.au

Gran Sasso Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC (full case buy only)

Regular Price: $13.99

Special Price: $13.50

Blood plum, nuts, licorice and some chocolate on a middle weight palate that delivers plenty of flavour along with attractive chewiness and freshness. The length is particularly impressive and closes with a desirable Italianate bitterness, like chicory or similar. Is it the best release of Gran Sasso to date? I suspect so. I defy you to find a more interesting, savoury wine with modest alcohol and food friendliness at the price. If you do, please let me know. It’s ever so slightly better than a 90 point wine ... Hay Shed Hill Cabernet Merlot 2012

95 points James Halliday - "Ticks all the boxes from the first whiff through to the finish and aftertaste; shows the effortless power that a medium-bodied wine can provide when varieties, place and winemaking are all in sync. ...
Black fruit, dark mint chocolate, bay leaf and spice. Medium bodied, but feels densely packed and surprisingly rich with layers of silky smooth palate covering tannin, more to red and black fruits to taste, well seasoned with aromatic herbs and spice. This is seriously good wine for the money.  92 points Winefront.com.au"

Dark red to black colour. The nose shows raspberry, aniseed, tar, cola, vanilla cream, rosemary, sage and menthol. The palate has layers of liquered red fruits and complex, supple tannins. The sweeter fruits and glycerols seem to completely coat the tannins underneath. Try with Indian dishes or BBQ'd red meats. Easy to drink now or up to 10 years.

Head Wines the Old Vine Grenache 2014

Regular Price: $39.00

Special Price: $37.50

As low as: $35.00

The Barossa Old Vine Charter declares Old Vine to be anything 35 years or older. This is that, and more, being 73 years old and from a vineyard near Krondorf.  20% whole bunch and spent 12 months in a 20 year old 2500L foudre. So many numbers, and luckily they all add up to something great.

Sweet cherries and raspberry, spice, smoked meat, peanuts in their shells, dried flowers and a pleasant kind of sweatiness. Light to medium bodied, confusingly feels succulent and bony at the same time, has a gentle sweetness of red berry fruit, yet a dry stony texture to its fine grained tannin. Lovely clean length.
Complex.
Light on its feet. Beautiful to drink. It’s how you make Grenache sing. 95 Points Winefront.com.au

Head Wines ‘NOUVEAU’ Touriga Montepulciano Grenache 2014

Regular Price: $20.00

Special Price: $19.00

As low as: $18.00

60% Touriga Nacional and 40% Montepulciano, from Marananga. And why not? Last year’s model was great.

Earthy, meaty and spicy, sour cherries and chocolate, floral high tones, then that metallic thing that you (I) seem to get in Touriga which runs through the palate. Light to medium bodied, juicy and meaty at once, light tannin, refreshingly bitter flavours – quinine and amaro herbs – and a juicy sour cherry finish of decent length. Lovely to drink.
Fascination and quaffing level enjoyment at once. Recommended. 91 points Winefront.com.au

Heartland Spice Trader 2012

Regular Price: $17.50

Special Price: $15.00

This is a very dark glass of juicy and delicious red. A burst of intense primary fruit greets the palate with blueberries, blackberries and currants. These powerful fruit notes can engulf the uninitiated, but waves of spice can be discovered by seasoned flavor explorers.

Hewitson Baby Bush Mourvedre 2012

No mistaking its appeal. Berried flavour, complexing notes of tobacco leaf and leather, a general savoury/earthy/spiciness and the sweetness of fruit to keep you tipping back for more. Integrated tannin. More or less unresolved on the finish but time will take care of that.
