    Mandoleto Catarratto Sicilia (Case Buy)

    Regular Price: $15.00

    Special Price: $13.00

Green pear, citrus, apricot kernel and a few dried herbs, but perhaps ‘cooly fruity’ is a good way to describe it. It’s clean and refreshing with excellent fruit purity and a little bit of ‘mineral’, perhaps there’s a touch of sweetness to round out  and balance, but feels pretty much dry and pulls that way with its gently herbal and sparkling finish. Well, maybe not ultra-complex, but so good to drink. 91 points Winefront.com.au

I must add as a post script, that I thought this wine was about $45, rather than $30. This means that you should buy some! I should too! Excellent – Outstanding / 94 points Sealed With Wax
Matured in used French oak, this is a cut above many tempranillos, with superfine tannins running through its mix of red and black cherry fruits providing excellent texture, structure and length. 94 points James Halliday

Honey, nuts, blue fruit and spice, with a little new leather. Medium to full bodied, very blue tasting wine, layered with spice and nutty flavours, balanced acidity and a fleshy tannin finish. All just so. Mataro
a wonderful expression of the Barossa and a great counterpoint to Shiraz. 94 points Gary Walsh WInefront.com.au

... It really needs a couple of years at least to show itself properly. It tastes of peanut shells, dark cherries, leather, anise, chinotto, various dried herbs. It’s juicy and well balanced but stern and tannic through the finish. I wasn’t sure at first; when I came back a couple of hours later, I was certain. This is fabulous value. And, given some time, will be terrific drinking. 91+ points WInefront.com.au

This is a very dark glass of juicy and delicious red. A burst of intense primary fruit greets the palate with blueberries, blackberries and currants. These powerful fruit notes can engulf the uninitiated, but waves of spice can be discovered by seasoned flavor explorers.

Grenache brings lifted aromatics and its trademark sandy tannins, Shiraz chimes in with red fruits, spice and weight, whilst the Touriga, a lusty, powerful Portuguese variety, adds pungent fruit characteristics of plum pudding, dried spices and floral notes. The resultant wine is so much more than just the sum of it’s three parts, and is utterly drinkable and down right irresistible.

  1. Head Wines ‘NOUVEAU’ Touriga Montepulciano Grenache 2014

Head Wines ‘NOUVEAU’ Touriga Montepulciano Grenache 2014

    Regular Price: $20.00

    Special Price: $18.00

60% Touriga Nacional and 40% Montepulciano, from Marananga. And why not? Last year’s model was great.

Earthy, meaty and spicy, sour cherries and chocolate, floral high tones, then that metallic thing that you (I) seem to get in Touriga which runs through the palate. Light to medium bodied, juicy and meaty at once, light tannin, refreshingly bitter flavours – quinine and amaro herbs – and a juicy sour cherry finish of decent length. Lovely to drink.
Fascination and quaffing level enjoyment at once. Recommended. 91 points Winefront.com.au

  3. Wirra Wirra the Absconder Grenache 2012

Wirra Wirra the Absconder Grenache 2012

Produced off 95 year old vines, what makes this special is just how utterly Grenache-y it is. Purple-red in colour, the nose smells of plum Roll-Ups, red licorice, black pepper and dark earth, at once bright and clean yet also with a wallop of Grenache meatiness. The palate follows with a contained, yet utterly ripe and intensely juicy palate. No oak to be seen (barrels are 6 years plus), the acid is just a little snappy on the back end (TA 6.1), but the finish is long, with that concentrated brambly licorice character that you only ever see in really old vine Grenache (and I love).
