  1. Wirra Wirra the Absconder Grenache 2012

Wirra Wirra the Absconder Grenache 2012

Produced off 95 year old vines, what makes this special is just how utterly Grenache-y it is. Purple-red in colour, the nose smells of plum Roll-Ups, red licorice, black pepper and dark earth, at once bright and clean yet also with a wallop of Grenache meatiness. The palate follows with a contained, yet utterly ripe and intensely juicy palate. No oak to be seen (barrels are 6 years plus), the acid is just a little snappy on the back end (TA 6.1), but the finish is long, with that concentrated brambly licorice character that you only ever see in really old vine Grenache (and I love).

"Deep, bright crimson-purple; the siren allure of the bouquet is answered by the deliciously supple and rounded medium-bodied palate, which almost leads to swallowing it ..... varietal blackcurrant is cut in crystal, tannin and oak minor players. "94 points James Halliday
"Some whiffs of toast, licorice, Chinese five spice, ash, violets and dark berry fruit. Reserved kind of perfume, but plenty there to encourage you in. Firm tannins surrounding plushness of fruit with sour-sweet tang of herbs and bayleaf. Chalkiness, length and genrosity of wine all impressive. Slot it straight into your mid week repertoire."  92 points Winefront.com.au

    Regular Price: $24.00

This wine is a blend of 47% Cabernet Franc, 46% Merlot, 4% Malbec, and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon that has spent 10 months maturing in one, two and three year old French barrels. Deep intense crimson in colour, the nose is broody and complex- with dark berry fruits dominating. The palate is dense and exotic, showing the beautiful red berry fruits of Merlot and Cabernet Franc combined with the spice of Malbec. The wine finishes with lashings of ripe fruit tannin.

mulberry flavours provide the fruit backbone along with hints of Asian spice, licorice, frangipani, almond paste and earth. It treads a focussed line with bright, sapid acidity and drive throughout its length.
A curtain of gentle ripe chalky tannin wraps up the proceeding as the wine trails off showing fine acidity and spicy red fruits. Delicious.

  2. Tim Smith Wines Barossa Shiraz 2013

Tim Smith Wines Barossa Shiraz 2013

    Regular Price: $36.00

    Special Price: $34.50

    As low as: $34.00
“Always enjoy the wines from Tim Smith, and could you have a more modest name than Tim Smith? Two syllables. It’s pretty much business as usual for Tim Smith Shiraz here, so if you’ve liked the past few vintages, then no surprises here. Blackberry, chocolate, vanilla nougat, spicy biscuits etc. Medium to full bodied, deep flavour, firm grainy tannin and well balanced acidity, then mixed dark berries, vanilla and Barossa coal run through to a long and tannic finish. Textbook. Likely a little more to come over the next few years.”- 93+ points Gary Walsh.

"Matured on fine yeast lees in mostly French oak; sourced from 10 vineyards, the oldest 130 years; part Barossa Valley, part Eden Valley. Made with great skill, this is a seriously good wine, awash with black fruits, licorice and
fine, brambly tannins; the balance and length are perfect, the oak fully integrated" - 96 Points James Halliday

    Hither & Yon Aglianico 2013

    Regular Price: $22.99

    Special Price: $21.50

    As low as: $21.00

Bright plum red; the nose has a soft red fruit fragrance - there's a reference on the back label to 'pink marshmallow' which I think is great. Sappy, dry palate is framed with tannins - bitter, mouth-cleansing, proper tannins. Complement that with some cherry red fruit late juiciness and you've got frankly one utterly delicious, dry and savoury red. Those tannins are perhaps just a little too bitter, but gee it makes for a refreshing and vital one.
    Massive yes. Drink 2015-2025+. 18/20, 93/100

Would I buy it? Yes. I'd need something meaty, but I'd smash a half bottle." Andrew Graham OzWineReview

Dark purple with bright red hue. Blackcurrant, menthol, violet pastille. Plush dark fruits, cocoa, red earth. Rich and lively, hints of black licorice and vanilla, finishing with smoky oak and medium tannin lift. There is a warmth and length to the wine for lovers of the traditional McLaren Vale Shiraz Cabernet style.

    Ravensworth Canberra Shiraz Viognier 2014

    Regular Price: $34.00

    Special Price: $32.50

    As low as: $31.00

There’s no mistaking it as anything other than a Shiraz Viognier but if you have any time for the blend in cool climates then I urge you not to write it off. Incorporation of whole bunches and 5% Viognier.
It’s a sinewy, guttural expression here. The season may have given some washiness to flavour, but the tannins crawl through the wine with earthy, elemental grunt. It smells of wild berries on briar, game meat, crushed rocks. Flavours and textue feel savoury, dark, tinged with herbs, sappy. There’s a touch of evenness missing in the wine, but it’s almost better for it with that powdery tannin chew.
    To savour. " 94 points Winefront.com.au

Wine Companion tasting note. Rating: 97  Drink By:2025 Alcohol:13% James Halliday - Published on 04 Aug 2015
"No pause for thought: this is gloriously delicious sangiovese. Then I find out that five vineyards have provided grapes for the wine, which explains how the layers of red fruits, headed by cherry, have been built into the wine; even more remarkable is its freshness, reflected in the very modest alcohol. On top of all this, there are fine, savoury tannins giving texture and structure that will underwrite the medium-term cellaring of the wine. " 97 points James Halliday

In a word, spectacular - Gavin
