Quick Overview

Ultimately this a triumph of a wine. Exactly what you’d want for young Grenache, with this impossible red fruit plumpness, the alcohol not excessive, the tannins welcome. It’s not meant to be a wine for the long term, but it’s got the guts to be convincing. Win. Best drinking: Now to ten years. 18/20, 93/100. 13.8%, $35. Would I buy it? Yes, sure would."Australian Wine Review 93 points

Product Description

We source Grenache grapes from a few different locations across the Barossa, but in 2016 there were two old vine parcels (one from Bethany and one from Marananga) that showed particularly bright and expressive fruit characters.

The Bethany parcel was tucked away in a small fermenter without a single grape being crushed, making it 100% whole bunch. The Marananga parcel was 50% whole bunch. Wild yeast ferments were used, which also provided extended maceration time. This is a bright, light and crunchy wine.

"Hand picked, wild yeast, 91% whole bunches, unfined, unfiltered. 2650 bottles made. From Bethany and Marananga. That’s a whole lot of whole bunch. It shows in the wine. It hits you with smoky, nutty, spicy flavour, challengingly so, though it then backs it with Turkish delight and pure plum flavours. It yells at you but then lets you off easy. It does though remain grabby and light. It looks a little murky in the glass, which I don’t mind at all. This is grenache as food. Pulpy, savoury, smoked. You wouldn’t think it’s to everyone’s taste but who cares. It works."

"It’s not hard to get enthused about these Schwarz Meta wines. The pointy end of Barossa wine and just delicious drinks. This Grenache is an absolute standout too.  Handling is A1 for a start. Handpicked with 91% whole bunches, wild fermented and matured in old oak and tank before bottling unfined and unfiltered. The joy is the effortless Grenache juiciness, that shines despite the whole bunch meatiness asserting itself. Personally, I think that the sheer volume of ripe fruit flavour means that it doesn’t look stemmy at all, and the whole-bunch tannins just complete the palate (though others may find it a bit more stemmy no doubt).
