.... it jumped out as irresistible. Not difficult to see why.  If you like the mainstay of Australian grenache, you will like this Spanish version. Sweet fruit, minerally tannin, dry finish. Gunsmoke. Obviously accessible but the fruit has character and class. Black and red licorice. Beautiful freshness. Energetic wine from go to whoa. You just want to drink it. Under $15? Excellent buying.  89 Points Screwcap Drink : 2013 – 2015 . Campbell Mattinson.  www.winefront.com.au
..... The big news is that it's even better than Spain's top-selling red wine in this country. It's an authentic and structured grenache which sets a dynamic contrast between blackberry, plum and liquorice fruit, subtle herbal complexity and firm, fine rustic tannins. This is declassified Campo de Borja from north-eastern Spain, not classified, because that would only make it more expensive.  90 points. Glaetzer the Wallace GSM 2014

    Regular Price: $21.99

    Special Price: $19.99

    As low as: $19.00

Glaetzer Wallace takes on the traditional Barossa Valley blend of Shiraz and Grenache in a thoroughly modern way.

Overt dark cherry, cracked pepper anad raspberry notes are lifted and fragrant on the nose. Dark fruit lushness on the palate counterbalances a spicy suppleness and focus. Flavours of blackcurrant, blueberry and crushed spice provide depth and complexity. Very approachable in it's youth and will develop great complexity as it ages.

Raspberry juice, musk, spice and perfume. Medium bodied, supple and succulent, ultra-fine powdery tannin, clean acidity, a touch of meatiness, with a smattering of dried herb and brick dust tannin cleaning up the finish. Flat out delicious: a bonus point for that.”

Head Wines the Old Vine Grenache 2014

    Regular Price: $39.00

    Special Price: $37.50

    As low as: $35.00

The Barossa Old Vine Charter declares Old Vine to be anything 35 years or older. This is that, and more, being 73 years old and from a vineyard near Krondorf.  20% whole bunch and spent 12 months in a 20 year old 2500L foudre. So many numbers, and luckily they all add up to something great.

Sweet cherries and raspberry, spice, smoked meat, peanuts in their shells, dried flowers and a pleasant kind of sweatiness. Light to medium bodied, confusingly feels succulent and bony at the same time, has a gentle sweetness of red berry fruit, yet a dry stony texture to its fine grained tannin. Lovely clean length.
    Complex.

In beautiful condition and shape. It tastes beautiful. Raspberry, blueberry and blackberry, no alarms or surprises, complemented by woody spice and fine, smoky oak. Everything is where it should, and where you'd hope, it to be. 94 points James Halliday

Excellent - "...When young it typically shows fresh redcurrant, blackberry and espresso aromas, supple textures, underlying savoury notes and plenty of flavour length. With age it develops greater fruit complexity and buoyant richness." Langton's Classification of Australian Wine VI, 1 May 2014 Learn More

Kalleske Clarrys Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2016

    Regular Price: $23.50

    Special Price: $21.99

    As low as: $21.00

This wine is a delightful purple red colour. The nose is fabulous, dark plums, blackberries, blueberries, with a slight dusting of icing sugar, exotic spices, and a savoury earthiness all mingled together. The palate is not a let down it's absolutely delicious, that plummy blackberry fruit, mingled with dark raspberries, pure fruited, long and lively. It has a real creaminess to the palate, great length, and really really fine tannins on the finish. The oak is well in the background, leaving all that wonderful organic fruit to do the work.
Given all the above, the wine is actually wonderfully medium bodied, as this style should be. This wine tastes like it should be $30 or more a bottle, it's that good. It is easily the best all of this line yet, and should become your house wine. Gavin Trott

Kalleske Moppa Barossa Valley Shiraz 2014

    Regular Price: $29.50

    Special Price: $27.99

    As low as: $26.99

Moppa 2014 is inky purple in colour. It’s alive with scent, displaying attractive aromatics of fruit cake, chocolate, flowers, dried herbs, musk, vanilla custard and cinnamon spice. The palate is full-bodied and initially greets you with juicy red-black fruits followed by toasty hazel-nutty oak and chocolate. The tannin profile is superb, fine grained but fleshy adding texture and definition.

Well structured, this is a complex and well balanced wine with fruit at the fore but background oak in support. Generous in flavour, it’s completed by a very lengthy finish. Moppa 2014 is an expressive Shiraz that can be enjoyed now or will cellar well in the medium to long term.

The wines seem a little more cloudy, but fine, as an observation. Raspberry rope, rhubarb and ginger and assorted exotic spices, new leather and floral perfume. Medium to full bodied, lovely fleshy chalky tannin and even acidity – mouthfeel is really enjoyable in its rustic unpolished style. Red berries and savoury meaty flavours with a long dry tannic finish. Shows a minor amount of warmth, but really no quibbles here.

Distinct Aussie bushwalk scents of earth, eucalyptus, wet leaves, sweet paperbark bark. There’s dark berries and plum going on, but it’s that savoury lift that defines the wine. Medium weight, glossy in texture, crisp acidity lending a freshness as the sweet slick of red-black fruit glides across the palate. There’s leafy notes through the wine, light sandy tannins, and it finishes with a little saline character. All up, it’s a bright, flavoursome wine, with fine structure; an easy wine to come at and drink or cellar. Bewdy. "93 points Winefront.com.au

Mataro is not an easy variety to handle on its own, tending to be bolshie. Here a top site and experienced winemaking has harnessed its power, providing a full-bodied palate that is still well balanced, and sultry black fruits side-step the tannins with a little bit of help from the oak maturation.

An extraordinary, highly perfumed wine with an assortment of heady aromas of musk , Turkish delight and dried woody herbs. Being a cooler vintage, the fruit is lively and fresh with youthful, juicy, concentrated characters of pomegranate and morello cherry . This Grenache has an elegant, medium body with a sustained, savoury finish, and all-important fine, proud tannins that complete the palate.

Grenache brings lifted aromatics and its trademark sandy tannins, Shiraz chimes in with red fruits, spice and weight, whilst the Touriga, a lusty, powerful Portuguese variety, adds pungent fruit characteristics of plum pudding, dried spices and floral notes. The resultant wine is so much more than just the sum of it’s three parts, and is utterly drinkable and down right irresistible.

.....It tastes like the future of Barossa Mataro. Just 1290 bottles produced.
Dark maroon-purple, it's genuinely fragrant - which is revelatory for dour old Barossa Mataro - with the spicy whole bunch fruit giving a whole new sexy edge. There's a lightness and freshness of black fruit, tilled earth and fine tannins, if not quite the depth and length of a superstar. Gee this is much more approachable and lively than nearly any other Barossan Mataro though! Love the licoricey fruit and refreshing style.

Red and black fruits, earth, hard brown spices, some licorice, menthol and new leather – floral too – has plenty going on, even if I’m imaging some of it. Medium bodied, fine grained plush tannin, chocolate and mixed berries, fleshy feel with well settled acidity and, the important bit, heaps good balance and drinking appeal. For my tastes, these are some of the best wines coming out of the Barossa. This wine, yes, though not specifically this wine, I’m talking about blends from older vineyards that see old (or no) oak, aren’t stuffed around with too much in the winery, and most importantly, are great to drink. So here’s Joshua, a blend of Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz.

The nose is expressive and inviting with aromas of strawberries and cream, raspberry and redcurrant fruits with hints of white pepper, spice, thyme, licorice and creamy lees characters. On the palate the wine is weighted just right and fills the mouth with lifted red berry fruits, maraschino cherry, raspberry, candied citrus rind and soft spice with a good dash of Mataro earthiness.... again with an attractive white pepper lift poking through the vibrant fruit.. The wine finishes, long, dry and savoury

"Some wines just hit the nail square on.

This is one such wine. It’s both fresh and textural, lively and substantial enough. You taste it and think: yes. It flows where it needs to, gathers where it must, persists when it’s all on the line. There’s quite a deal of fine-grained tannin and yet its dryness never interrupts the argument in favour of the wine’s quality, or its drinkability. It gives light- to medium-bodied red wine a good name."

The Wine Front - Gary Walsh - 92pts - ... A more spicy, savoury expression of Grenache, and while it does have some pretty florals, it's more earthen and red fruited rather than confected. Medium bodied, almost delicate, with a gentle rasp of tannin, even acidity, and a long spicy finish. It's right in the zone for drinking now. Heaps of charm and drinking appeal.

Jancis Robinson MW - 17pts - Pale cherry red. Light, sweet, delicate nose - really quite perfumed - and also very delicate on the palate. This certainly doesn't taste anything like a 15 per cent-er. Very beautiful texture and freshness. Entertaining fruit and very succulent. No jamminess. Bravo! Really super charming with raspberry fruit and just a hint of something medicinal to give it interest. Maybe Barossa has something to teach Chateauneuf?

Jamie Goode - 92 pts -  "From the southern edge of the valley, this is highly aromatic with floral red cherry fruit and a lush, liqueur-like raspberry fruit quality. Supple and smooth in the mouth with bright frsh red cherry fruit. This is a bit Pinot-like, but has a grippy, spicy edge. Such a pretty expression of Grenache."

Deep red. Heady aromas of strawberry and kirsch. The strawberry component is a result of whole bunch fermentation with the Grenache component. Spicy and layered, the medium bodied palate has earthy Mataro richness and length. Fruit flavours are in the dried fig spectrum. Soft, mature and savoury skin tannins define the finish.

“Always enjoy the wines from Tim Smith, and could you have a more modest name than Tim Smith? Two syllables. It’s pretty much business as usual for Tim Smith Shiraz here, so if you’ve liked the past few vintages, then no surprises here. Blackberry, chocolate, vanilla nougat, spicy biscuits etc. Medium to full bodied, deep flavour, firm grainy tannin and well balanced acidity, then mixed dark berries, vanilla and Barossa coal run through to a long and tannic finish. Textbook. Likely a little more to come over the next few years.”- 93+ points Gary Walsh.

fine, brambly tannins; the balance and length are perfect, the oak fully integrated" - 96 Points James Halliday
