Quick Overview

"There's always a fineness and elegance to cabernet sauvignon from the Great Southern - the graphite, gum leaves, lapsang souchong tea, licorice currants and cassis. It's also medium-bodied with finely tuned slightly grippy tannins and an overall freshness. And no one will blink twice for drinking it now. Drink by: 2028; Price: $25.00; Date Tasted: Jan 17; Alcohol: 14.1%;" Rating: 95; Jane Faulkner; James Halliday Wine Companion

Product Description

This wine displays bright and lifted aromas of black currant and bay leaf, and gentle oak support. The wine is effortlessly mouth filling with juicy red fruit flavours balanced with acidity and gentle fine grained tannins which lead to a long finish. It is well suited to red meat dishes such as a roast leg of lamb with garlic and herbs. It will continue to develop in the bottle for up to eight to ten years.

The cool Great Southern is a natural home for Cabernet, and its good (red) friends. Cabernet (78%), Merlot (21%) and Malbec (1%) shine in this Singlefile blend. Its bright and lifted aromas jump from the glass, wafting with blackcurrant, bay leaf and gentle oak tones. Take a sip and flavours of juicy red fruit, balanced acidity and gentle fine-grained tannins lead to a long finish. Team it with a lamb roast slathered with garlic and herbs, or store it in the cellar (8-10 years) until you can bear to wait no longer

I love it when reds like this make it onto my desk. They make life and work easy. Value plus. Flavour plus. A bit of X-factor. It’s pretty hard to argue with this offering at $25. It tastes of blackcurrant, redcurrant, bay leaf/gum leaf, gravel and cedar, and while there’s some alcohol warmth it’s entirely in line with the meatiness of the overall offering. Oak adds polish. Tannin, a bit of swagger. Hard to go wrong here, particularly if you like a bit of size to your reds.
