"Rugged with tannin but the fruit here seems up to the task. A good stint in the cellar is certainly going to be required. Blackcurrant, eucalypt, gravel and swish, polished, cedar oak. Brilliant value for the patient. 94+ points Winefront.com.au"
Wine Companion tasting note. Rating: 95 points price $28.00 Date Tasted: 01 Dec 2014 Alcohol:13.5%
Deep dark colour, plenty of flavour, feels gutsy throughout but not in any way loose or undisciplined. Impressive wine. Cassis, eucalypt, smoky/cedary oak and various floral characters. Assured through the finish. Tannin builds up a head of steam; cellar time is required but the quality is there.

Has a distinct smell of liquorice and aniseed, layers of spice and floral perfume, mulberry and plum fruit, and what you might call ‘crushed rocks and pencils’, though our words are code for something else that’s probably too hard to describe, really. Medium bodied, dense and tannic, and the tannin here is the thing that sets it apart: a slick of gravelly and minerally feeling stuff. Acidity is spot on, with no spikes or pricks on the way through, just this feeling of composition and primal earthy depth. Some chocolate and red fruits in there too, and a wide web of sticky tannin thrown on the finish.
Boy this is impressive Cabernet.” 95 points

    Forester Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Sitting where I sit, it’s easy lately to forget that wines like this exist. This is really clean crisp Cabernet from one of the places on Earth it grows best.

It’s all coffee and cocoa and mocha, cedary oak and blueberries, musk and faint lavender and violets, clean as a whistle and ready to swell and turn and glower with a decade in a good cellar. Once again made after the old (1950s) Penfolds open fermenters/temperature control/pumpover method, it delivers a similar result at just a bit of the price of their best.

As it plays around in your mouth, its slender and sinuous form does that magical transformation from silky and elegant viscosity to velvet, with the right level of acid and drying fine-grained tannins sorting all the slick stuff out, letting them all trickle through the organoleptic division in the right order at the right pace.

Right now I’m loving it with crumbly sheep’s cheese, lemon juice, basil and black pepper on dark rye. I could drive myself nuts dreaming of having it with simply grilled lamb cutlets, pink and dribbling, and mash. It makes your cheeks leak; opens the salvaries till they gush.

Maybe too clinically bright for the dirty-arse funkster fanatics, it’s a damn good reflection of the noble Cabernet at its arrogant, aromatic best. Regardless of the politics, I can’t imagine anybody refusing a glass." 93+ Points

    Fraser Gallop Cabernet Merlot 2013

    Regular Price: $24.99

    Special Price: $23.50

The wine itself is soft and approachable with juicy plum and pomegranate flavours. The tannins are quite grainy and persistent similar to cranberry juice. The oak in this wine definitely sits in the background allowing the fruit to shine and the acidity and alcohol levels are nicely balanced in the wine, making it very easy to drink.

Mixed berries, cocoa and vanilla, tobacco, and this lovely perfume wafting about. Medium bodied, silky and tightly packed, clean acidity, ripe but fresh berry fruit, with a distinct ‘minerally’ feel to it. Freshness, length, complexity and effortless drinkability.
Absolutely bang on. Can’t recall a better release of this wine. 93 points Winefront.com.au

An 80/20% blend destemmed, standard Hay Shed Hill vinification; 13 months in French oak. Healthy crimson colour; a wine of considerable stature, with cassis and redcurrant fruit leading the way, pursued by firm tannins that unequivocally ask that you bide your time for 3 or so years. 93 points James Halliday

95 points - "An 86/10/4% blend of cabernet sauvignon, malbec and cabernet franc, standard Hay Shed Hill vinification, then French oak for 13 months. All about complexity, built on the fruit blend, the tannin structure, the oak and the terroir. A quintessential Margaret River style; there are even better examples, but you have to pay three or four times as much to get one. Screwcap. 14% alc. To 2028." 95 points James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion 2015, 27 July 2015

Part estate, part contract-grown grapes from the northwestern section of the Valley. While plush and generous, there is no doubting the varietal make-up of this wine, charged with totally delicious cassis fruit, in turn balanced by fine and ripe, yet imperious, tannins as befit the variety.
In typical fashion for Hentley Farm, you don't see the oak, simply know it's there. 94 points James Halliday

The natural tannins are solid and prominent but integrated and will add great longevity. This wine is powerful but controlled resulting in great balance. The finish is extremely lengthy and completes a complex and sophisticated wine. Merchant is a classic Barossa Cabernet that can be equally enjoyed now or in a decade.
