“Blackcurrant, cherry, plenty of mocha and a seasoning of bay leaf, mint and seaweed – that regional perfume, anyway. Full bodied, smooth and plush, plump fine grained tannin, slight burr of warmth, and a long finish closing with a slick of fine dark chocolate tannin and flavour. Excellent.’ – 93 Points Gary Walsh

“The blend percentages are not specified, but the wine spent 12 months in French oak. The cabernet is certainly dominant, with potent cassis and redcurrant fruit; the tannin structure is gently savoury, exactly as it should be, the palate long and well balanced.” – 94 Points James Halliday

The wine has a bright rich red colour, with a purple rim. On the nose, there are bright pretty blue fruits, with violets and red currants too. The wine has a fresh and even palate with red fruits and a hint of varietal mintiness. There are fine tannins and a very good length. Go old-school with food and wine matching, and have it with roast lamb

95 points. “Medium to full-bodied with licorice, dark cherry and plum building the main tent of flavour; clove and eucalypt as the guy ropes; tannin stake it all firm. Outside of flavour descriptors the best way to describe this wine is to say: it will mature beautifully over 15-20 years but it’s going to prove extremely difficult to keep your hands from it, even now in its youth.” James Halliday 95 points

93 points - "Small parcels from estate blocks vinified separately from start to finish in new and used French oak. Convincing colour, and at the heavyweight/top end of the malbec scale, with loads of earthy plum and black fruits; the fruit has swallowed the oak, and the tannins are in balance. This wine shows vibrant primary fruit flavours of plums, red berries and spices. Finishing soft and round with velvety smooth tannins. Malbec is rarely seen as a varietal wine but here at Bleasdale and in Langhorne Creek it stands on its own two feet and performs well enough to earn its stripes.

Rugged with tannin but the fruit here seems up to the task. A good stint in the cellar is certainly going to be required. Blackcurrant, eucalypt, gravel and swish, polished, cedar oak. Brilliant value for the patient. 94+ points Winefront.com.au

Eden Road Gundagai Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Has a distinct smell of liquorice and aniseed, layers of spice and floral perfume, mulberry and plum fruit, and what you might call ‘crushed rocks and pencils’, though our words are code for something else that’s probably too hard to describe, really. Medium bodied, dense and tannic, and the tannin here is the thing that sets it apart: a slick of gravelly and minerally feeling stuff. Acidity is spot on, with no spikes or pricks on the way through, just this feeling of composition and primal earthy depth. Some chocolate and red fruits in there too, and a wide web of sticky tannin thrown on the finish.
Boy this is impressive Cabernet.” 95 points

The wine itself is soft and approachable with juicy plum and pomegranate flavours. The tannins are quite grainy and persistent similar to cranberry juice. The oak in this wine definitely sits in the background allowing the fruit to shine and the acidity and alcohol levels are nicely balanced in the wine, making it very easy to drink.

Mixed berries, cocoa and vanilla, tobacco, and this lovely perfume wafting about. Medium bodied, silky and tightly packed, clean acidity, ripe but fresh berry fruit, with a distinct ‘minerally’ feel to it. Freshness, length, complexity and effortless drinkability.
Absolutely bang on. Can’t recall a better release of this wine. 93 points Winefront.com.au

All about complexity, built on the fruit blend, the tannin structure, the oak and the terroir. Distinct Aussie bushwalk scents of earth, eucalyptus, wet leaves, sweet paperbark bark. There’s dark berries and plum going on, but it’s that savoury lift that defines the wine. Medium weight, glossy in texture, crisp acidity lending a freshness as the sweet slick of red-black fruit glides across the palate. There’s leafy notes through the wine, light sandy tannins, and it finishes with a little saline character. All up, it’s a bright, flavoursome wine, with fine structure; an easy wine to come at and drink or cellar. Bewdy. "93 points Winefront.com.au

With its deep, dense purple-red colour and superb blueberry, blackcurrant and violet-scented bouquet, this is a refined, elegant cabernet at a bargain price. It’s quite stylish, with abundant fine-grained tannins that run the length of the palate. It shows unbounded potential. Leconfield Coonawarra Cabernet 2014

    Special Price: $33.50

    As low as: $32.00

Review : "If anything this 2014 Leconfield Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon is the exact opposite of green – it’s teetering on too ripe. Sexy ripe though. Very dark red in colour, it’s concentrated and thick from the outset, with a very lush coffeed blackberry richness with a dash of eucalypt. Ahoy Coonawarra! Polished and silky, the style is silky smooth, fleshy and lavish, every bit the ripe and berry fleshed wine you expect it to be, complete with bitter tannins and warming alcohol.

My only quibble that it's a bit too warm and there’s no subtlety. Still, for weight, juiciness and silky length this is very easy to like. I may even be scoring it too lowly. Best drinking: 2018-2030. 18.1/20, 93/100.14.5%, $40." Ozwinereview

Full deep red. Rich ripe cassis and blackberry fruit nose integrated with cedar, nutmeg and cinnamon nuances through maturation in predominantly French oak. The wine proudly shows its Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon pedigree. The palate displays an excellent depth and persistence of rich dark mulberry fruit with ripe, long tannins. It is full flavoured yet retains elegance and finesse.

.....But now, over lunch, it really impresses. A slow burner. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, it spent 21 months in 40% new wood. What’s noticeable is the even ripeness "in this 2012 vintage – no leather and gumleaf! It’s so much more generous than previous years, with plenty of purple in there. Maybe a little syrupy through the middle (a common characteristic in ’12 Margs Cab), but tightens up nicely with grainy oak and then grippy tannins. A new world order for Leeuwin Cabernet, it’s long and quite modern, the length befitting the label. What a step up! Best drinking: 2020-2035. 18/20, 93/100. 13.5%, $68. Would I buy it? I enjoyed my few glasses. I’d be happy to have some in the cellar." Andrew Graham Australian Wine Review

Likely I won’t make any new friends by saying it, but most Australian red wine under $15 is kind of gross. Well, maybe not gross, but often they try too hard: too much cheap oak, sweetness, acid adjustment, high alcohol etc. etc. all at the expense of basic drinkability.
Blueberry and mixed berries, wild herbs and nuts with a little chocolate. Medium bodied, light tannin with some grainy grip , balanced acidity and a nutty faintly perfumed herbal finish. Great mid-week drinking. Balance and value.

How long do you have? This will outlive most of us I suspect. It’s firm, tannic, rich and controlled. It’s an A-class wine with a long term future. Blackberry, graphite, dark chocolate and smoky cedarwood. There’s a reach of tannin and some leafy, almost mint-like lift. It all feels fine and impeccably well managed. 10 days on skins, portions separately matured in new and used French barriques for 18 months with a further 12 months maturation in bottle. A pure, powerful and perfectly balanced cabernet at the start of what will be a very long life. It oozes blackcurrant, bay leaf and savoury notes on its long palate and aftertaste, the oak certainly evident, but equally subservient to the fruit and tannin of the wine.
