In the wonderful, wide world of wine you will find around 60-odd synonyms for one of our favourite varieties – Mataro. There are the well-known ones of Mourvedre and Monastrell as well lesser known ones such as Balzac and Exparte…but our favourite by far is the French Estrangle Chien………………… The Dog Strangler.... Now don’t get us wrong…dogs nearly out number humans here at Teusner so we mean our four-legged friends no harm….we just love the name and we are sure you’ll love the wine.
Select parcels of old vine Mataro have been sourced from all over the Barossa for the Dog Strangler…..fruit from Vine Vale, Greenock, Moppa and Ebenezer…all vinified separately to produce a wine that is complex and a pleasure to drink.
100% Mataro ... 2011 was an excellent year for Mataro in the Barossa with the long cool & wetter growing season bringing out an atypical flavor spectrum in the variety. Primary aromatics are more European rather than the usual primary brooding core of dark red and black fruits.
Attractive rich red hue with a dark core. Earthy and deeply spiced the 2011 Dog Strangler is saturated with deep, ripe dark plum and mulberry fruits with a hint of red cherry lift. Plenty of lavender, dried rosemary, hung game-meats, musk and white pepper. The palate is well weighted with plenty of texture and fruit flavour’s of ripe, plum, blackfruit’s, mulberry and cherry. As to be expected there are the rich savoury and spicy aspects that we love from this variety in abundance. Nutmeg, Dutch licorice and a great earthy weight. Ripe, chalky tannins wrap in to a long persistent finish.
