  1. Samuels Gorge Tempranillo 2015

    Samuels Gorge Tempranillo 2015

    Regular Price: $41.99

    Special Price: $41.00

    As low as: $39.00

This wine is incredibly exciting with a huge range of exotic florals and spices in the bouquet. I see hints of cinnamon or the richer cousin Cassia bark. Initially it has a broody dark berry tone and then lifts with some delicate floral notes like the roses grandpa used to obsessively tend; dark ruby rose. The palate explodes like the fruit of a pomegranate with a nice tang linking in with the gravelly tannins.
It's like a locomotive on the palate, it keeps building steam. Great vitality and perfume!

Bright red berry fruits on the nose with lots of spice and pepper and a hint of oak. Young and vibrant, it's bigger and more savoury than the nose suggests, with black fruits, liquorice, mint, meat, pepper, spice and a touch of oak. It needs some time to soften but has lovely black and red berry fruits, savoury and spicy

Teusner The Dog Strangler Mataro 2013

    Regular Price: $32.50

    Special Price: $30.00

    As low as: $28.00

Attractive rich red hue with a dark core. Earthy and deeply spiced the Dog Strangler is saturated with deep, ripe dark plum and mulberry fruits with a hint of red cherry lift. Plenty of lavender, dried rosemary, hung game-meats, musk and white pepper. The palate is well weighted with plenty of texture and fruit flavour’s of ripe, plum, blackfruit’s, mulberry and cherry. As to be expected there are the rich savoury and spicy aspects that we love from this variety in abundance. Nutmeg, Dutch licorice and a great earthy weight. Ripe, chalky tannins wrap in to a long persistent finish.

The Dodger Tempranillo is medium red purple in colour. The aroma displays interesting complexity with rich fruits of blackcurrant and cherry combined with herbs, clove and nutmeg spice, tobacco, violets and a hint of earth. The palate
is extremely alluring with a combination of sweet and savoury characters.

Third vintage release of the affordable Calo tempranillo and it’s another goodun’. Value plus. It probably needs another 6-12 months in bottle but it’s bonza drinking once again. Glossy vanilla and bueberry. Soft. Has a bit of tannin to it. A bit of chew. Smoky, bacony, chicory length. Bloody good drinking. Gorgeously medium-weight and food friendly. 90 points Winefront

Vigne del Vulture Aglianico Pipoli DOC (Case Buy)

..Intriguing. Blood and blood plum, rose oil, hazelnut, bitter herb and chocolate. It's dry and chewy with a fair whack of chalky tannin but has the fruit and density to pull it off with style. Good to drink, interesting to taste, and ripping value to boot. Love it. Drink : 2010 - 2014 90 points Winefront.com.au

Invariably a good wine, and invariably better than the ever-popular Riebke Shiraz.

"You can count on it. It’s reliably good. Blackberry, plum, anise and leather flavours run amiably through the palate. It’s warm and rich-enough with a minerally, smoky, spicy finish. It won’t bowl anyone over with its quality but it will please most red wine lovers. Lots of flavour, and some character too.

Interesting wine, in a good way. Smells of honeycomb, spice, sweat, dried herbs and rich dark berries. Medium bodied, rich fleshy texture with plump tannin, plum, dried cherry and sarsaparilla flavours, clean acidity and a savoury and fruit sweet finish of good length.

Dusty scents of earth, red berry on briar, cedar and game meats. Reserved, kind of serious perfume. Red currants, sweet-sour flavours, plush in texture but contained in architecture of dusty tannins and drawn long and tight across the palate to a cinched, puckering point.
Like the medium bodied feel and tension here. Excellent.  93 points Mike Bennie Winefront.com.au

.....It tastes like the future of Barossa Mataro. Just 1290 bottles produced.
Dark maroon-purple, it's genuinely fragrant - which is revelatory for dour old Barossa Mataro - with the spicy whole bunch fruit giving a whole new sexy edge. There's a lightness and freshness of black fruit, tilled earth and fine tannins, if not quite the depth and length of a superstar. Gee this is much more approachable and lively than nearly any other Barossan Mataro though! Love the licoricey fruit and refreshing style.

Tremendously delicious wine. Fresh and fruit-driven but complex. Nutty first and foremost with raspberry, choc and dried herb notes keeping the momentum going. Lively, refreshing acidity. Yum with a capital Y.

McLaren Vale winery Coriole was the first to plant sangiovese in Australia, and have a strong Italian connection to this day, with Barbera and Nebbiolo also in their range. This is my pick from the current releases, just ahead of the Barbera. There's leathery dark fruit, with some sour cherry and chocolate flavours. Good on its own but even better with food. Top value. "It's easy to see why barbera is Italy's most prominent red variety: this stuff makes you crave pasta. This is tight, unforgiving, very dry red, with powerful, persistent, fine-grained tannin that sets the whole mouth puckering for tucker. It is not, what you say, fruit driven, or juicy. But feed it pure spaghetti bolognaise, or paste with lots of black olive and fresh herbs, and you're away. It will cellar for a decade." Philip White - Adelaide Advertiser

.....It's fresh, abounds with acidity and will have have you emptying your glass quicker than you can say: "by Jove, that's a tasty wine". Such great drinking. 93 points The Vinsomniac
Winemaker Alex Shirrah fermented these whole berries in “small beeswax-lined vats”. Whatever he did worked magic. If these are typical of what Mark Lloyd is calling Coriole’s “New Australian Collection”, bring in those new Australians quick-smart. Nero d’Avola speaks no English; writes no latin. But it rocks. Give ’em a go." Phillip White

Sicily can be such a happy hunting ground for wines that combine drinkability, interest and good value. There’s three ticks here. This is savoury and minerally, but lush with dark cherries, spice, floral top notes, and maybe a few of the old cheeky black jellybeans. Love the smooth silty tannin, pitch perfect acidity, and the light spiciness to finish. It’s only just medium bodied, almost delicate for a Nero, but gee this is good drinking.

100 % Tempranillo from the Koomilya & Sellicks Hill vineyards in McLaren Vale. The must was traditionally vinified in small open-top fermenters for 10 days. Aged for seven months in large format French and Hungarian oak vats and puncheons, 20% of which were new. This is highly perfumed, vibrant and complex with sweet black cherries, sarsaparilla, and good hints of exotic spice. A plush, light- to medium-bodied, juicy wine with leafy, dusty tannins on the finish.

Barossa grenache to a tee. Sweet and ripe and yet earthen and spicy. Firm-ish with tannin. Raspberried, tarry, a touch of campfire, plenty of juice, some warmth. The way tannin surrounds the fruit and keeps it all controlled and neat adds a touch of class; it elevates it. It’s clearly very good.

A 49/29/22% blend of grenache, shiraz and mourvedre. Hand-picked, mechanically sorted, 50% whole berries, cold soak, open fermenters, plunged, wild yeast-fermented, kept on lees in 100% used French oak for 9 months. Brilliant hue; the wine effortlessly communicates its distinguished breeding, the medium-bodied palate with a silken line of fruit, then a thin coat of fine, savoury tannins. Drink By: 2028

The nose is dark, dark brooding and somewhat wild. The palate likewise opens with a wall of fruit-driven flavour – a complex swirl of blackcurrant, plums, meat and exotic spice all balancing within a framework of whole bunch twang and graphite tannins. Bright acidity keeps the wine light on its feet. An exciting indication of what is possible in the Barossa Valley.

The perfume gives you a hint, in a way, with cinnamon and earth-dusted ripe red fruit character and a hint of dried herbs. Ripe and generous as the fruit is, it's a compelling drink, layered in flavour and generous without being overbearing. It finishes with a dusty lick of pucker and a tickle of briny acidity. It's lovely to drink, but structurally is quite loose-knit.

Mataro is not an easy variety to handle on its own, tending to be bolshie. Here a top site and experienced winemaking has harnessed its power, providing a full-bodied palate that is still well balanced, and sultry black fruits side-step the tannins with a little bit of help from the oak maturation.

The TURKEY FLAT “BUTCHERS BLOCK” 2015 SHIRAZ GRENACHE MATARO (Barossa Valley) is ready to drink and rearing to go. No, it is not a thin, watery wine. It has a beautiful depth of purple colour, a lovely brambly, rich Barossan-nose, and a smooth, elegant, mid-weight body that makes the palate go YUM! YUM!

It is a gloriously well-balanced and structured wine that you can drink right now either on its own or with food – BUT wait, there’s more!! If like me you have a degree of patience, you can park it away in the cupboard or cellar for a while (12-24 months and 3-5 years respectively) and it will reward your patience by improving and rounding out to be a sublime wine.

Very bright in colour with an attractive and pretty pale pink colour. Quite perfumed with strawberry fruit characters and delicious sweet cherry fruit aromatics. This is very much a dry Rose with the attractive, savoury fruit characters on the palate that are typical of the Tempranillo variety.
It has great texture, good mouthfeel and a long finish. Being drier and less 'fruity' than many other Roses, it is a great food wine and would be well matched to a wide variety of foods.

Sourced from one of Plantagenet’s vineyards. There’s rumour that it is one of the original new wave tempranillo plantings of the variety in Australia, potentially. Planted 1999 or so.

Has some flesh, has lots of charm. Indeed, this is one of the great tempranillos of Australia. It’s packed with sinewy tannin, shrewd in dark fruit, coal and spice character through and through. Hugely aromatic, funk and wildness, a sip and it’s almost aggressive with you, yet it is deeply satisfying. No faking it’s worth or intent.
