    Elefante La Mancha Tempranillo Shiraz

    Regular Price: $13.99

    Special Price: $12.99

    As low as: $12.50

Price-wise this bats against the standard-issue Koonunga Shiraz; it would be easy to argue that it gives it a fair touch up. Distinctive peanut shell-like aftertaste. Bang on for drinkability. Campbell Mattinson; The Wine Front
Wine of the Week - The economic reality is that many other countries can produce good wines more cheaply than we can in Australia. This is a case in point: a terrific savoury quaffing Spanish red blend that won't break the bank.‘Wine of the Week’ Winsor Dobbin.a good mix between savoury and sweet too, with a .. good deal of Tempranillo to pan out the structure. It’s as generous as a paella pan overflowing with flavour, has a silky red fruit palate and some dried herb character. Ends with keen acids that keep it perky but it’s the smooth tannins that impress making for a seamless drink at the price. Patrick Haddock; Wining Pom

Unusually savoury too. That's really really good. Slight balsamic notes add piquancy and edge, but don't necessarily intrude, though I'd rather they were not there. So much character and life to this wine.  94 points Winefront.com.au
Sophisticated architecture. Oak is a minor player, contributing to the texture but never obstructing the fruit. There’s a joie de vivre about the whole affair which is just impossible to deny. Longevity is pretty much assured. 94+ Excellent

($35; 14.2% alcohol; screw cap; 93++ points). Phillip White So what makes this better?  Start with its alarming purity of message.  It's a letter of love from one tiny patch of priceless heirloom Shiraz in the northern Barossa. It's disgusting in its brazen determination to seduce. Take all the fruits and aspects of the Longhop above, and dilute them about 5:1 in a deep simmer of mulberry and baby beetroot.  Smack your favourite schoolteacher's blackboard duster against the side of the glass to add some country.  Then think of black satin and silk, patent leather court shoes and Jean Deprez Bal à Versailles perfume.  Take a schlück, and you get the sense of iron as much as sinuous acid and flesh.  Sexy beast's packin' a heavy short, so you get those whiffs of gunblue and cordite just to warn you that you're in the dark alone with this one.  Good for duck or softer, creamy cheddar.  And still inexpensive.

Blue fruit, sweet leather, spice, perfume, bit of liquorice – kiss of vanilla oak. Flush and plump with black fruit, spice, sweet tannin and some vanilla with plenty of length and oomph. Really good. Fresh blackcurrant aftertaste. 94 points Winefront.com.au

Absolutely beautiful to drink – glossy and slippery in texture with a pop of spice and a dash of pepper. It’s a seamless flow of crisp, gently sweet fruit and finishes with a lick of sweetness. Has an exotic feel to the wine in sweet/sour perfumes and flavours, almost pushing into amaro territory, but so very enjoyable. Joyous kind of vibe.

Deep purple-crimson, it is sourced from two estate blocks and one local grower .... the best selected for this wine. 14% alc; screwcap 95 points James Halliday Weekend Australian
.....This wine needs a huge sleep in a dark place to build on that already noticable complexity, to soften out and round off those tannins, and to let that coiled up power and intensity, uncoil. Seriously, the BEST Australian Malbec wine I have ever tried, and a cellar special ... a special wine this one. - Gavin Trott

  1. Bodega Catena Zapata Alamos Malbec

    Bodega Catena Zapata Alamos Malbec

The Catena Zapata Malbec shows a saturated dark violet color; the nose offers cassis, mocha and clove, along with a strong suggestion of soil tones. It combines density and sweetness on the one hand, with gripping flavors of tobacco, dark berries, spices and minerals; a palate-staining finish dominated by sweet black and blue fruits.

A blend of four vineyards - vineyards are divided into lots that are harvested at different times. Ripe plum fruit flavors and silky texture. Dark fruit character, dense mid-palate and pepper notes. Black cherry aromas and excellent structure. Explosive floral aromatics and full, concentrated mouthfeel.
International Wine Cellar -  91 points - Bright red-ruby. Raspberry, licorice and fig aromas lifted by sexy oak tones. Vinous and refined on the palate, with dark raspberry, currant and fig flavors complicated by a saline nuance. Nicely balanced and not at all overly sweet. ... Finishes with firm, fine, building tannins and excellent length.

Third vintage release of the affordable Calo tempranillo and it’s another goodun’. Value plus. It probably needs another 6-12 months in bottle but it’s bonza drinking once again. Glossy vanilla and bueberry. Soft. Has a bit of tannin to it. A bit of chew. Smoky, bacony, chicory length. Bloody good drinking. Gorgeously medium-weight and food friendly. 90 points Winefront
