.... it jumped out as irresistible. Not difficult to see why.  If you like the mainstay of Australian grenache, you will like this Spanish version. Sweet fruit, minerally tannin, dry finish. Gunsmoke. Obviously accessible but the fruit has character and class. Black and red licorice. Beautiful freshness. Energetic wine from go to whoa. You just want to drink it. Under $15? Excellent buying.  89 Points Screwcap Drink : 2013 – 2015 . Campbell Mattinson.  www.winefront.com.au
..... The big news is that it's even better than Spain's top-selling red wine in this country. It's an authentic and structured grenache which sets a dynamic contrast between blackberry, plum and liquorice fruit, subtle herbal complexity and firm, fine rustic tannins. This is declassified Campo de Borja from north-eastern Spain, not classified, because that would only make it more expensive.  90 points. Adelina Eternal Return Nebbiolo 2014

    Regular Price: $25.00

    Special Price: $23.99

    As low as: $23.00

From a cooler vintage (than the inaugural 2013), the '14 spent less time in barrel and came out with all the elegance and detailed fruit you could home for. Bright as a button and, at this price, guaranteed to bring many happy returns.
"If the spec was to produce a tasty, easy drinking Nebbiolo, that speaks of variety too, then the job's been done. Clean, fresh, strawberry and dusty spice, fennel and floral perfume, perhaps a little almond nougat too. Light bodied, gentle tannin, fresh and tasty, all red fruits and kitten's tongue tannin playing on the finish. It's not particularly long or intense, but is definitely very good to drink." 91 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, Apr 2016

    Special Price: $31.99

    As low as: $30.00

This is a primal, untamed expression of pure Nebbiolo fruit

Dark cherry, liquorice, violet and dried rose perfume. Medium bodied, fleshy and ripe, with layers of meaty and silky tannin, clean acidity, and an almost bubblegum perfume in the aftertaste. It's good fun now, though I reckon it will be much better with a couple of years in the cellar to let it settle down. What a bargain!

An emerging variety that matches so well with food. Bright, although relatively light, crimson-purple. A lifted nose of dark cherries, raspberries and sandalwood. The palate has luscious cherry flavours, delicate spice and delicious soft tannins.

Sicily can be such a happy hunting ground for wines that combine drinkability, interest and good value. There’s three ticks here. This is savoury and minerally, but lush with dark cherries, spice, floral top notes, and maybe a few of the old cheeky black jellybeans. Love the smooth silty tannin, pitch perfect acidity, and the light spiciness to finish. It’s only just medium bodied, almost delicate for a Nero, but gee this is good drinking.
    So sophisticated at the price.

It’s a very young and slightly raw wine, and while it’s probably meant to be enjoyed young, I’d either throw it into a decanter for a couple of hours, or pop it in the cellar for another couple of years: it makes a big difference. Anyway, as at now, it’s red fruited and perfumed, showing some sweet aniseed and spice, along with a whiff of new leather. Medium bodied, brightly lit and vibrant, with red cherry and red berry flavours, light chalky tannin, and a long gently sweet finish that’s perfumed and very fine. Remarkable wine for the money. 93+ points Winefront.com.au

Perfumed with musk and roses, dusted with spice and cocoa, and full of fetching mixed red berry and red cherry flavour. Medium bodied, supple and mouth-filling, though light on its feet, acidity is fresh, and fine chalky tannin trails off on a long sweet and spicy finish. Drink now and over the next few years. It’s a great, and non-threatening, introduction to Northern Italian red wine."

93 points - "Small parcels from estate blocks vinified separately from start to finish in new and used French oak. Convincing colour, and at the heavyweight/top end of the malbec scale, with loads of earthy plum and black fruits; the fruit has swallowed the oak, and the tannins are in balance. Deserves time. 13.5% alc. To 2035." James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion 2016, 27 July 2015

This wine shows vibrant primary fruit flavours of plums, red berries and spices. Finishing soft and round with velvety smooth tannins. Malbec is rarely seen as a varietal wine but here at Bleasdale and in Langhorne Creek it stands on its own two feet and performs well enough to earn its stripes.

A blend of four vineyards - vineyards are divided into lots that are harvested at different times. Ripe plum fruit flavors and silky texture. Dark fruit character, dense mid-palate and pepper notes. Black cherry aromas and excellent structure. Explosive floral aromatics and full, concentrated mouthfeel.
International Wine Cellar -  91 points - Bright red-ruby. Raspberry, licorice and fig aromas lifted by sexy oak tones. Vinous and refined on the palate, with dark raspberry, currant and fig flavors complicated by a saline nuance. Nicely balanced and not at all overly sweet. ... Glossy vanilla and bueberry. Soft. Has a bit of tannin to it. A bit of chew. Smoky, bacony, chicory length. Bloody good drinking. Gorgeously medium-weight and food friendly. 90 points Winefront

There’s talk that 2015 is one of the best vintages in Piedmont for quite some time, and that 2016 is even better. Oh dear. Oh dear oh dear. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…”

Black cherry, liquorice root, baking spices and potpourri. Medium bodied, supple and fleshy, almost juicy, then the Nebbiolo tannin extends its friendly and reassuring grip, slips in some savoury stuff like new leather, and closes with perfume and strong black tea flavour and texture. It needs some time in the decanter as a youngster, but still delivers

"It's easy to see why barbera is Italy's most prominent red variety: this stuff makes you crave pasta. This is tight, unforgiving, very dry red, with powerful, persistent, fine-grained tannin that sets the whole mouth puckering for tucker. It is not, what you say, fruit driven, or juicy. But feed it pure spaghetti bolognaise, or paste with lots of black olive and fresh herbs, and you're away. It will cellar for a decade." Philip White - Adelaide Advertiser

Winemaker Alex Shirrah fermented these whole berries in “small beeswax-lined vats”. Whatever he did worked magic. If these are typical of what Mark Lloyd is calling Coriole’s “New Australian Collection”, bring in those new Australians quick-smart. Nero d’Avola speaks no English; writes no latin. But it rocks. Give ’em a go." Phillip White

McLaren Vale winery Coriole was the first to plant sangiovese in Australia, and have a strong Italian connection to this day, with Barbera and Nebbiolo also in their range. This is my pick from the current releases, just ahead of the Barbera. There's leathery dark fruit, with some sour cherry and chocolate flavours. Good on its own but even better with food. Top value. has a strong and savory bouquet of mixed red and black fruit, lots of dried herbs and a dash of leather. Tasting the wine reveals jammy mixed berries, dried herbs, and some good prominent tannins. (Prominent, but not overdone by any means.) This is a very good, rich wine with some savory smoky notes. The finish is long, dry and spicy with a bit of mocha, some earthiness and a little dark berry. Viva la Monastrell!

Sourced from one of Plantagenet’s vineyards. There’s rumour that it is one of the original new wave tempranillo plantings of the variety in Australia, potentially. Planted 1999 or so.

Has some flesh, has lots of charm. Indeed, this is one of the great tempranillos of Australia. It’s packed with sinewy tannin, shrewd in dark fruit, coal and spice character through and through. Hugely aromatic, funk and wildness, a sip and it’s almost aggressive with you, yet it is deeply satisfying. No faking it’s worth or intent.

Probably our favourite current release from this producer. Smells like Nero, all the blood plums, cherry and liquorice, but with a saline edge, and maybe a little mint. Medium bodied, fleshy, cherries, fine grained tannin, some brine, spice and a pretty convincing finish. Not guilty of being ordinary, is the verdict. Gary Walsh, Winefront 91 points

This, for me at least, is textbook Barossa Shiraz. It’s perfumed and rosy, smooth with milk chocolate, raspberry and plum, light spicy oak framing the fruit beautifully. Medium bodied, silky and fine, melts on the palate and lays the charm on thick throughout. Turkish delight and gossamer fine tannin trails on a long fresh finish. Delightful."
