.... it jumped out as irresistible. Not difficult to see why.  If you like the mainstay of Australian grenache, you will like this Spanish version. Sweet fruit, minerally tannin, dry finish. Gunsmoke. Obviously accessible but the fruit has character and class. Black and red licorice. Beautiful freshness. Energetic wine from go to whoa. You just want to drink it. Under $15? Excellent buying.  89 Points Screwcap Drink : 2013 – 2015 . Campbell Mattinson.  www.winefront.com.au
..... The big news is that it's even better than Spain's top-selling red wine in this country. It's an authentic and structured grenache which sets a dynamic contrast between blackberry, plum and liquorice fruit, subtle herbal complexity and firm, fine rustic tannins. This is declassified Campo de Borja from north-eastern Spain, not classified, because that would only make it more expensive.  90 points. Third vintage release of the affordable Calo tempranillo and it’s another goodun’. Value plus. It probably needs another 6-12 months in bottle but it’s bonza drinking once again. Glossy vanilla and bueberry. Soft. Has a bit of tannin to it. A bit of chew. Smoky, bacony, chicory length. Bloody good drinking. Gorgeously medium-weight and food friendly. 90 points Winefront

  1. Dark Matter Spiced Rum

    Dark Matter Spiced Rum

    Regular Price: $90.00

    Special Price: $85.00

    As low as: $83.00

In the glass, the quality and freshness of the ingredients create a huge whack of intense ginger, fruitcake and brown spice aromatics and the class of the molasses creates a texture and a finesse across the palate that is unique in spiced rum in our experience. This is not the only element of Dark Matter that is atypical for its category - the purity and balance of the spirit, the intensity of flavour and the refreshing and savoury, wildly spicy kick on the finish makes Dark Matter an ideal sipping Spiced Rum. It also marries beautifully in a Dark & Stormy, with a dry Ginger Beer (such as the StrangeLove Organic Ginger Beer) or simply with Strangelove’s Organic Smoked Cola and some fresh lime. No matter how it is served, Dark Matter offers a terrific drinking experience and has clearly set a new benchmark for Spiced Rum category.

Or as the Dark Matter boys put it, “The taste equivalent of warping into a liquid black hole but without every atom in your body being crushed to an infinitely small point.”

has a strong and savory bouquet of mixed red and black fruit, lots of dried herbs and a dash of leather. Tasting the wine reveals jammy mixed berries, dried herbs, and some good prominent tannins. (Prominent, but not overdone by any means.) This is a very good, rich wine with some savory smoky notes. The finish is long, dry and spicy with a bit of mocha, some earthiness and a little dark berry. Viva la Monastrell!

Each botanical is distilled separately and then blended to recipe, essentially a winemaker’s approach. Using a copper pot bain-marie alembic still, traditionally used for making perfume, to preserve the delicate nature of the botanicals. You will no doubt recognise the juniper berries and coriander seeds associated with London Dry Gin.

These classic foundations are blended with local botanicals of macadamia, sandalwood, honey lemon myrtle, rosemary, grapefruit and organic navel oranges; as well as exotics of angelica root, orris root and cassia bark.

    Monkey 47 Gin

    Regular Price: $105.00

It's for this reason that unconventional flavours such as spruce tips, blackberries, sloes, sage and verbena are used in this unique gin. In 2008, The Black Forest Distillers adopted Montgomery Collins' recipe, and named the new gin 'Monkey 47' in memory of Max the monkey, and as a nod to the number of botanicals used and the gin's alcohol volume. The small medicine/lab-like bottle has a stamp-like label complete with perforation marks top and bottom. It also has a very natty natural cork stopper with a stainless steel band around the middle of the cork preventing the cork being driven home into the bottle so it sits proud, like a re-corked wine bottle.

    Ron Zacapa 23 Centenario Rum

    Regular Price: $125.00

An awesome rum – winner of a Platinum medal and ranked in First Place by the prestigious Beverage Testing Institute in Chicago, with a whopping 97 points. Interestingly, now that industry giants Diageo are distributing Zacapa, the '23 years old' age statement has suddenly been dropped and replaced with a somewhat more plausible claim – the rums used are aged between 6 and 23 years old and are blended together in a solera.

Containing a blend of rums from 6 to 23 years old

Wonderfully intricate with honeyed butterscotch, spiced oak and raisined fruit, showcasing the complexity of the sistema solera ageing process. Light mahogany, with the tones of long barrel ageing at the rim and long, slow legs clinging to the glass.

Oz Clarke's 250 Best Wines for 2012 (Jan 2012) - An excellent example of sherry – and simply outstanding value for money. Fino sherry is bone dry, but a little fuller than manzanilla, a little fatter, even, but it still has that marvellous tangy dryness which makes it such a good appetizer, that almost slightly sour green apple peel acidity and the strange soft-sourness of yeasty bread dough – rather like a malty mixed grain bread in the making. There's also a taste of roasted almonds – and roasted almonds would be the perfect accompaniment.

Cranberry, damask rose, pomegranate, cherry juice and cracked dark husky spices (not quite clove, or black pepper) mingle in a beautifully pure Toro red earthiness. Fine and polished nose - floral, figgy and gently meaty, it's a delicate and perfectly varietal expression of Monastrell. Soft, wide tannins start the mouth off and a long rip of ripe acid in the back half really straightens things out. Almuvedre has long been one of the bargain wines of the world and the style-quality-value amalgam continues to boggle the mind. Now in screwcap!
