Near the western tip of Sicily, the vineyards of Erice rise steeply above the ancient city of Trapani. Mandoleto is inspired by the groves of Almond trees (Mandorlo) that flower in spring, providing a dash of beauty to this dramatic landscape.
On the lower slopes, the region’s warm Mediterranean climate is moderated by cooling sea breezes to provide an ideal location for Sicily’s finest red wine – Nero d’Avola.
A ripe and expressive wine balanced by savoury complexity, Mandoleto Nero d’Avola is the ideal companion for richly flavoured cuisine.
If I were in the market for a tasty weekday wine, I’d be all over this like a fat kid on a Panettone. Importer: Fourth Wave Wine Partners Blood plum, sweet herb and aniseed perfume, pepper and new leather. It’s medium bodied, fresh and vivacious, with sweet red fruit and plum but enough Italianate savouries to pull it back into line. Appropriate level of tannin, a cola nut and subtle Chinotto-like bitterness and whole lot of drinking charm complete the package. Score is thereabouts correct, though not particularly important.
