  1. Dog Point Pinot Noir 2014

    Dog Point Pinot Noir 2014

    Regular Price: $47.99

    Special Price: $46.00

This is the most triumphant Dog Point Pinot yet. I had to try this three times, coming back time and time again just to confirm whether it was ‘that good’ and my nose/mouth wasn’t deceiving me. Seriously concentrated, even in its absolute youth this looks spot on, all bright red fruit and a little stemmy sap on the nose. The palate is deep and surprisingly firm, entirely mouthwatering despite the low acidity, the long, spicy, sappy finish a masterpiece.

Central Otago be damned! Masterful and grown up Marlborough Pinot with a vitality that is unmatched. Interesting that this had me thinking about the brilliant Fromm Pinots when tasting this (which are some of the best Pinots in the region). Maybe it is the low acid and bright fruit? What a wine. Ready to go already as well. Yes. Best drinking 2016-2026. 18.7/20, 95/100. 14%, $35. Would I buy it? Oh yes. Would be nice to have a case of this hanging around the house.

    Michael Cooper
Looking for 'texture, rather than rich aromatics', winemaker James Healy and viticulturist Ivan Sutherland fermented and lees-aged their 2013 vintage (5*) Sauvignon Blanc for 18 months in seasoned French oak casks. Hand-harvested in the Dog Point Vineyard (for which 'Section 94' was the original survey title), at the confluence of the Brancott and Omaka valleys, and fermented with indigenous yeasts, it is light lemon/green, with a complex bouquet. Mouthfilling and sweet-fruited, it is poised and youthful, with lively acidity and concentrated, multi-faceted flavours, showing lovely depth and harmony. It's still developing, but already delicious.
    Arguably the best yet. -

It's such a stirringly aromatic wine, singing 'Marlborough Sauv' with a big, full and slightly sweaty nose of ripe fruit. Importantly, there a herbal edge too, a nod to what Marlborough Sauv should taste like, ie not all tropical fruit. Actually, there's no tropicals at all, which makes this (arguably) even more enjoyable. A long palate, prominent acid and yet still with plenty to come.

An alluring combination of cumquats, peaches and yellow grapefruit melds with the more savoury aromas of almond nougat, vanilla beans and marzipan - an opulent concoction that is infused with a charry smokiness. The savouriness carries through onto a wonderfully dry, but rich and powerful palate that has great texture and concentration - evidence of this wine's low-intervention genesis.

Some old French oak, wild yeast, time on lees, funk. Not your usual NZ sauvignon blanc. Excellent intensity. A tonne of wild character. Gravel, tropical fruit, sweat, earth, thistles, orange peels, sulphur. Has a slippery smooth coating to it, but pulpy passionfruity acidity refuses to be calmed. So intense it almost hurts. Excellent lingering finish. Armed and dangerous style of sauvignon blanc. In-your-face but remarkable quality. Rated : 94 Points WInefront.com.au

94 points. “Out of Step never seems to put a foot wrong. Boom boom. You could even say that Out of Step is a name to watch. This wine alone gives credit to that theory: it’s intense in a smooth, elegant way, its heart of barley and tropical fruit is kept tucked behind notes of gravel and woodsmoke. The thing is: picking individual flavours here is difficult. It just presents “as one”. The walls of oak and fruit are down; it’s a unified wine. The mouthfeel here has to be felt to be believed; this is super silken. In all it’s an outstanding wine.” 94 points- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

"Some wines just hit the nail square on.

This is one such wine. It’s both fresh and textural, lively and substantial enough. You taste it and think: yes. It flows where it needs to, gathers where it must, persists when it’s all on the line. There’s quite a deal of fine-grained tannin and yet its dryness never interrupts the argument in favour of the wine’s quality, or its drinkability. It gives light- to medium-bodied red wine a good name."

Eden Valley ... The Great Escape is our benchmark, cool climate Chardonnay produced from fruit grown in elevated vineyard sites which allow for a long ripening period which helps to maintain the natural sugar and acid balance of the grape. With moderate alcohol, focussed, crisp citrus fruit and a mouthwatering finish, this is an accomplished, truly modern style of this noble variety.

…triumph!! ...clean cut of acidity, and a long silky finish strapped up with a little new leather. Succulent and lively at once. Tasty stuff." 93 points Winefront.com.au

Wine Selectors Magazine, Australia..... The palate has juicy layers of plum and black cherry fruit with supple candied confectionary varietals. The tannins are super soft and velvety with mouth-watering acidity driving a long finish. An absolutely beautiful Grenache awarded Gold by all panel members.

The Wine Front - Gary Walsh - 92pts - ... A more spicy, savoury expression of Grenache, and while it does have some pretty florals, it's more earthen and red fruited rather than confected. Medium bodied, almost delicate, with a gentle rasp of tannin, even acidity, and a long spicy finish. It's right in the zone for drinking now. Heaps of charm and drinking appeal.

Jancis Robinson MW - 17pts - Pale cherry red. Light, sweet, delicate nose - really quite perfumed - and also very delicate on the palate. This certainly doesn't taste anything like a 15 per cent-er. Very beautiful texture and freshness. Entertaining fruit and very succulent. No jamminess. Bravo! Really super charming with raspberry fruit and just a hint of something medicinal to give it interest. Maybe Barossa has something to teach Chateauneuf?

Jamie Goode - 92 pts -  "From the southern edge of the valley, this is highly aromatic with floral red cherry fruit and a lush, liqueur-like raspberry fruit quality. Supple and smooth in the mouth with bright frsh red cherry fruit. This is a bit Pinot-like, but has a grippy, spicy edge. Such a pretty expression of Grenache."
