Hand Crafted by Geoff Hardy Fiano 2016

    Regular Price: $23.00

    Special Price: $22.00

    As low as: $21.00

Fiano is a white Italian variety grown primarily in the Campania region in the south and also on the island of Sicily. Known for its low yields, strong flavours and intense aromas, this is a variety to watch in the years to come.

The nose shows delicate orange sherbet, rock melon and sweeter apricot notes with a slight mineral undercurrent shown through fresh river rock pebble aromas. The palate is sensual and textured and leaves a crisp acidic finish in your mouth. Serve with fried whitebait and a roast garlic aioli.

Turkey Flat Barossa Valley White 2016

    Regular Price: $24.50

    Special Price: $21.99

    As low as: $21.00

A layered and thought provoking blend inspired by the whites of the Rhone Valley. The underlying rich medley of fresh and roasted stone fruit is topped with a toasty note of spice-laced crumb. Balanced with a restrained, zesty hit of ginger on the lingering finish.

Traditional to the Turkey Flat style the Marsanne was picked early and pressed lightly, then this year fermented in barrel. The Roussanne was a little riper when hand picked and subsequently was treated whole bunch. Viognier was hand picked, chilled, crushed and saw 48 hours on skins before gentle pressing.

Pie apple, alpine herbs and candle wax, chamomile tea and ripe lemon. Pulpy lemon laced apple flavours, almost chalky texure with some raw almond, crunch of acidity (though not too much) and dry and saline finish offering a pleasant amount of gustatory bitterness. Yep. 1. Hand Crafted by Geoff Hardy Gruner Veltliner 2016

Hand Crafted by Geoff Hardy Gruner Veltliner 2016

    Regular Price: $23.00

    Special Price: $22.00

    As low as: $21.00

Planted in the ancient soils of the K1 vineyard, Gruner Veltliner has found a new home in the cool southern Adelaide Hills where it produces exceptional white wines that capture both the old-world essence of Austria and the modern vibrancy and clarity of Australia.

During the 2015 vintage, the Hand Crafted fruit was picked two weeks later than its K1 counterpart and the extra time on the vine allowed further flavour development and lowering of natural acids, which both contributed to the wine's increased weight and structure. In cooler vintages, the difference between when the fruit is picked for the two distinct styles might be as much as three to five weeks.

The nose exhibits aromas of lychee, rock melon and fuji apple, which continue on the palate with additional tropical and mineral notes. Balanced acid adds to the full-bodied and creamy mouthfeel.

  2. Dark Matter Spiced Rum

    Dark Matter Spiced Rum

    Regular Price: $90.00

    Special Price: $85.00

In the glass, the quality and freshness of the ingredients create a huge whack of intense ginger, fruitcake and brown spice aromatics and the class of the molasses creates a texture and a finesse across the palate that is unique in spiced rum in our experience. This is not the only element of Dark Matter that is atypical for its category - the purity and balance of the spirit, the intensity of flavour and the refreshing and savoury, wildly spicy kick on the finish makes Dark Matter an ideal sipping Spiced Rum. It also marries beautifully in a Dark & Stormy, with a dry Ginger Beer (such as the StrangeLove Organic Ginger Beer) or simply with Strangelove’s Organic Smoked Cola and some fresh lime. No matter how it is served, Dark Matter offers a terrific drinking experience and has clearly set a new benchmark for Spiced Rum category.

Or as the Dark Matter boys put it, “The taste equivalent of warping into a liquid black hole but without every atom in your body being crushed to an infinitely small point.”

  3. Adelina Eternal Return Arneis 2016

    Adelina Eternal Return Arneis 2016

    Regular Price: $25.00

    Special Price: $23.99

    As low as: $23.00

This fleshy Arneis is made from a measly few rows rooted in the Bowe Lees vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, 390mt above sea level. If you like your Arneis in the crisp, nutty/pear aperitif guise, look away now. Arneis means "little rascal" in the Piedmontese dialect and this seriously savoury/earthy rendition of site and grape lives up to that name. With swathes of spicy, yellow plum and fuzzy peach fruit, and a chewy, phenolic-edged grip to finish off, there is nothing simple or sedate about this delicious wine. In spite of the extract-rich palate (given even more bass by 20 per cent indigenous fermentation in neutral oak) the wine remains zingy and super refreshing, encouraging you to have another glass, or three.

Dark cherry red, light purple rim. Black cherry, toasted pinenut and thyme. Dark cherries, blackberry, raspberry licorice. Light fruit weight, quite tart, with woody herbs, a hint of aniseed, fine tannins and red earth. This is a young style, which is clean, juicy and simple. There is just enough sweetness, making it very food friendly.

McLaren Vale winery Coriole was the first to plant sangiovese in Australia, and have a strong Italian connection to this day, with Barbera and Nebbiolo also in their range. This is my pick from the current releases, just ahead of the Barbera. There's leathery dark fruit, with some sour cherry and chocolate flavours. Good on its own but even better with food. Top value. "It's easy to see why barbera is Italy's most prominent red variety: this stuff makes you crave pasta. This is tight, unforgiving, very dry red, with powerful, persistent, fine-grained tannin that sets the whole mouth puckering for tucker. It is not, what you say, fruit driven, or juicy. But feed it pure spaghetti bolognaise, or paste with lots of black olive and fresh herbs, and you're away. It will cellar for a decade." Philip White - Adelaide Advertiser

It’s medium bodied, has fine grained tannin, and combines a savoury dimension with supreme slurpability. Tannin rolls on the finish and cleans everything up. Oh, has some dried flower perfume too.

It’s a very young and slightly raw wine, and while it’s probably meant to be enjoyed young, I’d either throw it into a decanter for a couple of hours, or pop it in the cellar for another couple of years: it makes a big difference. Anyway, as at now, it’s red fruited and perfumed, showing some sweet aniseed and spice, along with a whiff of new leather. Medium bodied, brightly lit and vibrant, with red cherry and red berry flavours, light chalky tannin, and a long gently sweet finish that’s perfumed and very fine. Remarkable wine for the money. 93+ points Winefront.com.au

"In the scheme of Australian nebbiolo, currently, this is sensational value. More kudos to the whip smart winemaking nous of braniacs Colin McBryde and Jennie Gardner, and of course, the wonderful grapes grown on the Gardner estate (though this isn’t grown there).

This has charisma. Old rose petals, sweet pot pourri, pepper, Chinese five spice, dark cherries. Great bouquet, evocative and enticing. Palate is juicy, deep in flavour, richer than expected but tied down on peeling waves of building, puckering, suede tannins. Has a sexy brushed velvet feel to it across it’s huge length. Antipasto watch out. Sensational drinking." Rated : 93 Points Winefront.com.au

Sourced from one of Plantagenet’s vineyards. There’s rumour that it is one of the original new wave tempranillo plantings of the variety in Australia, potentially. Planted 1999 or so.

Has some flesh, has lots of charm. Indeed, this is one of the great tempranillos of Australia. It’s packed with sinewy tannin, shrewd in dark fruit, coal and spice character through and through. Hugely aromatic, funk and wildness, a sip and it’s almost aggressive with you, yet it is deeply satisfying. No faking it’s worth or intent.

Light but bright crimson hue; a surprise packet with an indecent amount of complex varietal fruits. Cherry and plum engage in a duel to establish primacy, the referee coming in with spicy/ savoury tannins to give context to the contest – which ultimately remains unresolved.

96 Points Nick Stock - A lighter, more pure and elegant expression from Shaw + Smith in 2015, this has bright cherry compote and fresh cherry, spiced strawberries, pastry-like and biscuity savory notes, gently meaty and peppery too, this has plenty of complexity and yet shows the purity of fruit very clearly, nicely delivered. Blue fruits as well as rose-like perfume, very subtle oak here. The palate has supple and fleshy fruit, tannins are fine and even, really sweet spices that are worked into the heart of the fruit, red cherry stone finish, very even, long and fired along by crystaline, vibrant acidity. Notes of sour cherry and spices with a little cinnamon and clove. Palate is smooth and textured but with a fine, firmish core of chalky tannins and fine-grained oak. Lick of precise acid to finish. An impressive wine.

Classic Barossa aromas of dark plum, blackberry and macerated summer berry fruits literally spill out of the glass here. Hints of Asian spice, licorice, earth, roasting meats, purple flowers, berry flan and gently spiced oak add to the wines aromatic complexity.
Plenty of texture and attitude on the palate with a solid wall of ripe, concentrated black fruits. Flavours of satsuma plum, blackberry and blueberry all coming into play. There is a lovely flow to the fruit over the mid-palate with the rich fruit supported by hints of abundant spice, dark chocolate, earth and subtle oak notes. A curtain of ripe, chalky tannin provides a supportive frame for the fruit to hang off and the wine trails off persistently with flavours of opulent black fruits and Asian spice.

The wine is full and broad on the palate with juicy red fruit character up front, and the finish is firm due to fine-grained, dusty tannins which add length and complexity from the spicy/savoury notes of Shiraz and Touriga.
