Learning about wine should be an enjoyable journey of discovery.

While there are thousands of wines to choose from, the first easy step is understanding the five basic wine styles:

Hand Crafted by Geoff Hardy Fiano 2016

    Regular Price: $23.00

    Special Price: $22.00

Fiano is a white Italian variety grown primarily in the Campania region in the south and also on the island of Sicily. Known for its low yields, strong flavours and intense aromas, this is a variety to watch in the years to come.

The nose shows delicate orange sherbet, rock melon and sweeter apricot notes with a slight mineral undercurrent shown through fresh river rock pebble aromas. The palate is sensual and textured and leaves a crisp acidic finish in your mouth. Serve with fried whitebait and a roast garlic aioli.

Turkey Flat Barossa Valley White 2016

    Regular Price: $24.50

    Special Price: $21.99

    As low as: $21.00

A layered and thought provoking blend inspired by the whites of the Rhone Valley. The underlying rich medley of fresh and roasted stone fruit is topped with a toasty note of spice-laced crumb. Balanced with a restrained, zesty hit of ginger on the lingering finish.

Traditional to the Turkey Flat style the Marsanne was picked early and pressed lightly, then this year fermented in barrel. The Roussanne was a little riper when hand picked and subsequently was treated whole bunch. Viognier was hand picked, chilled, crushed and saw 48 hours on skins before gentle pressing.

Hand Crafted by Geoff Hardy Gruner Veltliner 2016

    Regular Price: $23.00

    Special Price: $22.00

    As low as: $21.00

Planted in the ancient soils of the K1 vineyard, Gruner Veltliner has found a new home in the cool southern Adelaide Hills where it produces exceptional white wines that capture both the old-world essence of Austria and the modern vibrancy and clarity of Australia.

During the 2015 vintage, the Hand Crafted fruit was picked two weeks later than its K1 counterpart and the extra time on the vine allowed further flavour development and lowering of natural acids, which both contributed to the wine's increased weight and structure. In cooler vintages, the difference between when the fruit is picked for the two distinct styles might be as much as three to five weeks.

The nose exhibits aromas of lychee, rock melon and fuji apple, which continue on the palate with additional tropical and mineral notes. Balanced acid adds to the full-bodied and creamy mouthfeel.

  1. Adelina Eternal Return Arneis 2016

    Adelina Eternal Return Arneis 2016

    Regular Price: $25.00

    Special Price: $23.99

    As low as: $23.00

This fleshy Arneis is made from a measly few rows rooted in the Bowe Lees vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, 390mt above sea level. If you like your Arneis in the crisp, nutty/pear aperitif guise, look away now. Arneis means "little rascal" in the Piedmontese dialect and this seriously savoury/earthy rendition of site and grape lives up to that name. With swathes of spicy, yellow plum and fuzzy peach fruit, and a chewy, phenolic-edged grip to finish off, there is nothing simple or sedate about this delicious wine. In spite of the extract-rich palate (given even more bass by 20 per cent indigenous fermentation in neutral oak) the wine remains zingy and super refreshing, encouraging you to have another glass, or three.

Dark cherry red, light purple rim. Black cherry, toasted pinenut and thyme. Dark cherries, blackberry, raspberry licorice. Light fruit weight, quite tart, with woody herbs, a hint of aniseed, fine tannins and red earth. This is a young style, which is clean, juicy and simple. There is just enough sweetness, making it very food friendly.

  3. Adelina Eternal Return Nebbiolo 2015

    Adelina Eternal Return Nebbiolo 2015

    Regular Price: $25.00

    Special Price: $23.99

    As low as: $23.00

Simply put, The Eternal Return is declassified Adelina Nebbiolo. All the fruit hails from the Bowe Lees vineyard, at Woodside in the Adelaide Hills. This vineyard, also the source of Adelina's Arneis, lies on sandy brown & grey loams at 390 metres above sea level and was planted between 1998 and 2002. More recently, the vineyard has started moving towards biodynamic practice. Col fills in the winemaking specs, thus: fruit was handpicked, destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeast. Maceration for days on skins. Post pressing, the wine was racked to barrel for 18 months for malo (indigenous) and maturation. Well-grown Nebbiolo fruit ain't cheap so this qualifies as a flat-out bargain.

There’s more to this than meets the eye, the bouquet and palate suggesting augmentation by all or some of oak, skin contact and lees contact. What is certain is the extra length and depth of the mouthfeel. 95 points Weekend Australian, 19 November 2016

Sourced from one of Plantagenet’s vineyards. There’s rumour that it is one of the original new wave tempranillo plantings of the variety in Australia, potentially. Planted 1999 or so.

Has some flesh, has lots of charm. Indeed, this is one of the great tempranillos of Australia. It’s packed with sinewy tannin, shrewd in dark fruit, coal and spice character through and through. Hugely aromatic, funk and wildness, a sip and it’s almost aggressive with you, yet it is deeply satisfying. No faking it’s worth or intent.

Light but bright crimson hue; a surprise packet with an indecent amount of complex varietal fruits. Cherry and plum engage in a duel to establish primacy, the referee coming in with spicy/ savoury tannins to give context to the contest – which ultimately remains unresolved.

Classic Barossa aromas of dark plum, blackberry and macerated summer berry fruits literally spill out of the glass here. Hints of Asian spice, licorice, earth, roasting meats, purple flowers, berry flan and gently spiced oak add to the wines aromatic complexity.
Plenty of texture and attitude on the palate with a solid wall of ripe, concentrated black fruits. Flavours of satsuma plum, blackberry and blueberry all coming into play. There is a lovely flow to the fruit over the mid-palate with the rich fruit supported by hints of abundant spice, dark chocolate, earth and subtle oak notes. A curtain of ripe, chalky tannin provides a supportive frame for the fruit to hang off and the wine trails off persistently with flavours of opulent black fruits and Asian spice.

The TURKEY FLAT “BUTCHERS BLOCK” 2015 SHIRAZ GRENACHE MATARO (Barossa Valley) is ready to drink and rearing to go. No, it is not a thin, watery wine. It has a beautiful depth of purple colour, a lovely brambly, rich Barossan-nose, and a smooth, elegant, mid-weight body that makes the palate go YUM! YUM!

It is a gloriously well-balanced and structured wine that you can drink right now either on its own or with food – BUT wait, there’s more!! If like me you have a degree of patience, you can park it away in the cupboard or cellar for a while (12-24 months and 3-5 years respectively) and it will reward your patience by improving and rounding out to be a sublime wine.

Barossa grenache to a tee. Sweet and ripe and yet earthen and spicy. Firm-ish with tannin. Raspberried, tarry, a touch of campfire, plenty of juice, some warmth. The way tannin surrounds the fruit and keeps it all controlled and neat adds a touch of class; it elevates it. It’s clearly very good.

94 points. “Out of Step never seems to put a foot wrong. Boom boom. You could even say that Out of Step is a name to watch. This wine alone gives credit to that theory: it’s intense in a smooth, elegant way, its heart of barley and tropical fruit is kept tucked behind notes of gravel and woodsmoke. The thing is: picking individual flavours here is difficult. It just presents “as one”. The walls of oak and fruit are down; it’s a unified wine. The mouthfeel here has to be felt to be believed; this is super silken. In all it’s an outstanding wine.” 94 points- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Subtle white flower/vanilla bean perfume, fennel, stones, and mixed citrus (including tangerine) leads you in to a wine of immediate appeal and character. It’s lean and kind of bony, but delivers a lovely crunch of citrus, zinging but fine acidity, and a fine talc-like texture, which lends a lovely grip to the wine. Yum. So much flavour and intensity packed into a wine of just 11% alcohol. Lemon and lime leaf, slate, spice and flowers. It’s all go. Chalky and juicy, bursts through the mouth, and finishes long with a tussle between lemon sherbet and dry flinty texture. Bang on the money.

"I'm really liking the 2016 Rieslings from South Australia. This wine had been opened two days earlier (I’ve been away) and my wife reliably informs me that it’s much better now. I trust her judgement entirely. Girls are most often better at tasting wine than men, though they seem to lack the ‘Train Spotter’ gene which is responsible for the sometimes obsessive collector mentality found in many males. Offered as a broad generalisation/observation, of course.

Beautiful perfume here – blossoms, lime and green apple – leading into a lean yet curiously flavoursome palate featuring a fine acidity, and very appealing slate and brick dust texture. Super length, finishing with a real lemonade tang (the intensity of flavour meant here, rather than sweetness). Smashing."

Bang on. Both fresh and characterful. Not at all overdone – indeed it’s only light- to medium-weight – and yet there’s enough power to the fruit to make an impression. It’s made to be fresh and accessible and yet it pays homage to the age of the vines; it lets tension in through the front door. Sand, red and black cherry, graphite, cloves and rusty dry spices. A leathery, licoricey kick to the finish. Just enough tannin.

“Grown mostly on the Rayner vineyard in McLaren Vale. 43 year old grenache vines; 65 year old shiraz vines; mataro from nearby. Some whole bunches, mostly with the mataro. All old oak. Bottled unfined/unfiltered. Another fantastic release from Bondar. Just the right mix of structure, flavour and interest. This is a savoury, sinewy wine first and foremost though flavours of graphite, woodsmoke, black cherry and fennel mean that there’s plenty else going on. Those strains of spicy tannin though; those fistfuls of smoked twigs and spices; they really set the scene. It twirls and twists through the mouth like it’s mapping out genes. A light-but-exquisite red wine.” 93 points, Campbell Mattinson, winefront.com.au

The remainder spent nine days on skins and was fermented cool. 120 dozen made. It’s a marvellous grenache. It has a bit of beef, a bit of flesh, and yet it promotes dryness, spice and structure ahead of fruit. It’s not thick or massively intense but it’s convincing and indeed powerful, by its own design. Licorice, graphite, flings of dried herbs and bushes, a campfire smokiness. It’s textural, it’s aromatic, it’s a treat. The linger of tannin and flavour here is quite superb. Your best glassware, please.”

    1 bottle 2015 Sami-Odi ‘Mahé & Ribo’ (Syrah)

It’s as expressive and charismatic as always, from winemaker Fraser McKinley. It seems the 2015 season was generous in fruit for McKinley, so there’s a bit more to go around too. It really stood out in a recent tasting; I drained my glass, sat back, thought about it, repeated the process over an hour or so, and said to myself, ‘probably my Barossa red of the year’… (2016)
Red currants and ginger/clove spice. Fragrant, almost floral perfume, beguiling, incense like fog from the glass. Has a soft flow to the wine but cinched in a feathery web of tannins. Slow flow in medium weight, sweet fruits and spice. Warm glow to finish. Brilliant expression. Loaded and stacked with flavour and interest, but enough architecture to take the wine to decades of ageing.

     2 bottles Sami-Odi Little Wine #6

It’s shiraz from a fantastic vineyard in the Barossa Valley, gently nurtured to bottle, belnd of vintages
Lovely spice notes in the bouquet, clove, pepper, cedary notes, old leather, tobacco, then dark fruits, anise, plums. Lots going on between brooding fruit and savoriness. Tight tannins and crisp acidity keep the wine in check. It’s juicy, but crunchy-textured, very long in flavor, spicy, moody with blue and black berry fruit feel. It’s got a lot more structure than previous incarnations.
