Vintage was thankfully a little calmer in 2014 than the previous year, with a hot start but quite mild conditions during ripening which allowed for excellent tannin and flavour development. The parcels looked excellent with deep colours and pure ‘syrah’ flavours with nice pepper highlights. Similar to last year, the wine is a blend of Hyde Park Vineyard (72%), the cooler, 45 yr old Westgate Vineyard (3%) and the balance from Rice’s Vineyard (25%).
As always, wild yeast fermented, with a variety of fermentation sizes and shapes, some with whole bunches, some destemmed. This year’s wine has firm tannin and great structure to age for many years, and I rate it as perhaps the best ‘Grampians’ we have made in our 11 vintages. Unfined, unfiltered.
"Rory Lane’s latest Shiraz and it’s a beauty – if in need of another 2 years minimum to show it’s best. Sourced from three Grampians Shiraz vineyards – Rice’s Vineyard, Hyde Park and Westgate. Wild fermented with 40% whole bunches, it was matured in older French oak for 12 months. Again, the challenge here is how youthful it is, with a barrel-sample-esque primary, purple Grampian plum fruit with a white pepper sheen and fine, well formed tannins. Medium bodied, yet with that ripe plum fruit which reminds me of old Bests, and great balance, without losing its ‘mediumness’. It just needs time.
Best drinking: 2019-2030. 18/20, 93/100. 13.5%, $29. Would I buy it? Sure would. Two for the cellar thanks." Ozwinereview
"Made from vines now 18+ years old. The wine comes with a bonus short story printed on the label, the result/winner of the Overland Story Wine Prize. The winning story was penned by this-won’t-be-the-last-time-you-hear-this-name Leah Swann. A disclaimer: I was on the panel of judges.
The wine itself is outstanding. So beautifully fruited, balanced and structured. It’s alive with woody herbs, floral notes, olives, nuts and dark cherry-plum. There’s an edge of smokiness, almost a meatiness, along with traces of cracked black peppers.Feeling the curl of tannin here as it breaks through your mouth is like watching a wave form; it has that same kind or irresistible momentum, and that same kind of beauty. If this was double its price I’d still be tempted. "
