Although the recent series of seasons are none two alike I think the temperamental Tempranillo and I have come to an understanding over the last few years. Once again, this 2011 vintage Tempranillo from Samuel’s Gorge has in my mind achieved the harmony between the wild brackish notes and the divine sarsaparilla or dark cherry aromatics. The challenge I guess is bridling the potentially masculine tannins.
The 2011 vintage was a more overcast year than the usual blue sky summer of the Vale. We experienced an unusual dose of summer rain. Having said that we got off rather lightly compared with many Southern regions of Australia. A couple of 20mm rain events are not tragic but the cloud cover can block the light that drives the mature tannin range in this varietal. Considering the summer that never was, this wine shows plenty of power. A tribute to detailed viticulture and vineyards positioned on hill tops.
This wine is incredibly exciting with a huge range of exotic florals and spices in the bouquet. I see hints of cinnamon or the richer cousin Cassia bark. Initially it has a broody dark berry tone and then lifts with some delicate floral notes like the roses grandpa used to obsessively tend; dark ruby rose. The palate explodes like the fruit of a pomegranate with a nice tang linking in with the gravelly tannins. It's like a locomotive on the palate, it keeps building steam. Great vitality and perfume from Vale Cru young gun.
