Quick Overview

Mataro is not an easy variety to handle on its own, tending to be bolshie. Here a top site and experienced winemaking has harnessed its power, providing a full-bodied palate that is still well balanced, and sultry black fruits side-step the tannins with a little bit of help from the oak maturation.

Product Description

Massena's Mataro is more commonly used as a blending component in their Moonlight Run blend (with Grenache and Shiraz). In 2013, however, a heat wave during vintage decimated the boys' Grenache crop; the Moonlight won't be running anywhere in 2013. On the plus side, this was an exceptional vintage for dry-grown, unirrigated vineyards that are more comfortable with extreme conditions, meaning Massena's Mataro - sourced from a single vineyard located just to the west of the town of Nuriootpa on the road to Greenock - was a standout. Maturation took place in older 300L hogsheads for 12 months. The 2013 has 15% Saperavi in the blend.

Lifted aromas of liquorice, black cherry and a touch of dark chocolate are followed by some earth and spicy end notes. Bright, slick and full bodied; the palate delivers sumptuous flavours of ripe black plum and dark cherry intertwined with some chocolate bullets followed by some subtle earthy characters and a very spicy back palate. Velvet smooth tannins enhance the wines plush texture. Long black plum, chocolate bullet and spicy earth aftertaste.
