The cool climate Aude Valey in the south of France produces arguably the best French Pinot Noir outside of Burgundy. The high elevation and cooling evening breezes result in a clean and fresh wine with balance tannin and true varietal character. Totally de-stemmed before a long, cool maceration. Maturation is primarily in stainless steel with roughly one third undergoes carbonic maceration aiding aromatics and fruit expression. A further third receives six month maturation in French oak barrels for greater complexity. An elegant and restrained nose with red and black berries mixed with floral notes and spice aromas. The palate is rich and full bodied with an array of berry flavours. The class of the vintage is shown in the delicate and precise finish with varietal red berry overtones.
Decent, quaffable pinot noir for under $20? It's almost impossible to find but this terrific value import from the south of France manages it. Importer Nicholas Crampton describes it as “the best French Pinot Noir outside of Burgundy” and it is certainly a very tidy offering from the Aude Valley. It's on the riper side of the pinot spectrum, certainly no shrinking violet, but no brash bogan either. The (French) girl next door with smoothness, dark cherry fruit flavours, hints of earthiness and plenty of length. It can be found on special for as low as $15 but the RRP is $19. Windsor Dobbin
Perfumed, red cherry/strawberry conserve, choc-licorice bullet and a little cedar oak seasoning. Medium-weight, juicy and lively with ample fruit, but vibrant and perky. Not the most complex but tasty, varietal and sessionable. Some twigginess on the finish tapers in the line. No complaints here. Just to 90 points. Winefront.com.au
My son looked at the label and he said ewwwww, you’re drinking cat wine. Well this pussy inspired Pinot is no slouch at the price so I guess you could say I don’t mind my wine with a hint of feline. For your hard earned dollars, you get a fair whack of varietal Pinot character with smoky plum, cherry, and dark chocolate leading the charge. Texturally quite slippery, appealing and savoury in the mouth with a great stab of cherry intensity, dried herbs, sappy earth and a good core of spice and fresh acids. Great concentration and length for such a humble offering. The black cat is back. Wining Pom
