The Story Wilderness Grampians Shiraz 2008 $22.50 per bottle
Suitably, the palate follows this with a lovely soft and expansive flow of blackberry fruit, in a plump, yet quietly powerful expression of fruit richness. The boysenberry & licorice sweetness kicks up at the mid palate mark, before just a hint of back palate grip & Licoricey overtones. It's a little attenuated on the finish, though this probably reflects the fact that it was practically bottled yesterday. Drinking this actually reminded me of Foillard's Morgons in its juicy, understated brightness, a style of wine that I can drink by the bucketload. The Story Westgate Vineyard Shiraz 2008 $39.99 per bottle
The glory here is in that mid palate, which on day one [I drank this over two nights, in the renowned fashion] tasted almost grape concentrate like in its grapey richness and sweetness, before settling down to a much more drier, yet still fruit drenched expression on day two. Perhaps the only caveat with this wine lays in the oak. Day one I had this pointed lower as the toastiness was just a little dominant for my oak sensitive palate. Day two though and it was all sexy time Grampians fruit in a glass. Which tells us that it needs a serious (hours) decant or some time in the dungeon (About 3-5yrs by my guesstimate) before drinking. t’s fragrant and perfumed with juicy mixed berry fruits, spice and delightful cocoa and vanilla oak. Smooth and mouth-filling with abundant sweet fruit, spice and sumptuous suede-like tannins. The acidity is fresh, but unobtrusive, just enough to pull in the waist of all that fleshy ripe fruit, but discreetly. Pulsating length, closing with spice, and a firm, but ripely stalky aftertaste.
