Product Description
Only ever released in the best vintage years, the backbone of this substantive Shiraz is exceptional old vine fruit from famed, gnarled and dry grown Barossa vineyards at Ebenezer. Bishop is assembled from components which are up front and generous, showing animated, youthful characters, as opposed to the more restrained and structured components of the sibling Glaetzers. "From sixty year old vines in the Ebenezer district of Barossa, amazing richness as well as surprising elegance, think of it as a French Vacqueyras on steroids!" -Wine Advocate.com
A blend of fruit from 35 year-old vines & 120 year-old vines is the key to the Bishop cuvee. The fruit from younger vines is fresh & vibrant, whilst Shiraz from the oldest blocks in the Ebenezer vineyard give structure and enhance palate profile.
Wisps of cloves, nutmeg and five spice add definition to the layers of dark stone fruits and espresso. The palate has density yet also displays savoury, textural components and fine-grained ripe tannins.
A perfect food wine that is fresh and flavoursome and finishes with impressive length and depth. - Glaetzer Wines
This full-bodied wine is made predominantly from 30 to 60-year-old vines at Ebenezer and always contains material from the oldest 80-year-old vines. It is made from fruit components which are more up-front and generous - it shows more animated, youthful fruit characters as opposed to the more restrained structured Shiraz components. The Glaetzer Bishop is deep red with purple hues. A lifted nose of ripe plums, cinnamon and spice leads to flavours of liquorice and nutmeg supported by firm, rounded tannin. The wine shows a hint of French oak which adds extra dimension to the wine's complexity. This was probably the standout wine at the tasting of these releases. Is it better than the Amon Ra and Anaperenna? ... no, it isn't. However, its not far away, and at the price is a no brainer! What it is is a near perfect expression of Barossa Shiraz at a price that makes it a bargain! Gavin Trott Auswine
Deep garnet red colour. Aromas of liquorice and mocha intermingle with cassis and leather. Opulent fruit flavours on the palate are beautifully balanced by firm, velvety tannins from ageing in French and American oak. Refinement, elegance and solid structure. "There's opulent blackberry fruit with spice, coffee and licorice on the nose and palate of this classy complex Barossa red, finishes with velvety tannins and fine oak. You could try it now with roast beef or a good steak!" -Courier Mail,
"The Shiraz fruit, from the dry farmed Ebenezer vineyards, is gorgeous, with a deep ruby color, intense flavors of cassis and blackberries, and gentle tannins. the Bishop also has a rare elegance, despite its exuberance!" -Los Angeles Times
