Product Description
The 2009 vintage at Hilltops started with a bang with a temperature surge in early February. Temperatures cooled off as the vintage progressed and the fruit arrived at the winery showing plenty of power and enough spice to retain a cool-climate signature.
Great colour once again and powerful, ripe, black fruit aromas. A generous palate loaded with blackcurrant, liquorice and spice. Great now if you love a powerful red, but leave some in the cellar for five to ten years to taste its full potential.
Vibrant purple hue; dominated by savoury spicy notes, of cinnamon, clove, star anise and followed up by clearly defined blackberry fruit; the palate is lively and super fresh, showing a strong core of mineral and fresh earth; will be ample, juicy, long and generous, this is delicious as a young wine, or in ten years. Tim Kirk’s shiraz viognier did more than any other wine to build Canberra’s reputation. But the larger-volume, lower-priced Clonakilla Hilltops shiraz brings home the Kirk family’s bacon. The 2009’s sourced from three vineyards near Young and shows Tim’s magic touch. Its pure, ripe-berry, spice and musk aroma gets the juices flowing. The palate delivers similar pure varietal flavour and its woven with gentle, fine tannins. I rate this the best yet of this wine and recommend it for drinking now or cellaring for up to a decade. To put it bluntly – I don’t think they’re going to have any trouble selling this year’s release of Clonakilla Hilltops Shiraz. Even at $30.
It’s an excellent edition. It’s dense and purple, soft and fruity, and yet it’s got spice and elegance too. It’s got classy signs of cedary, smoky, toasty oak yet it finishes fruity and fresh. It doesn’t have a lot of tannin – it drinks very well, very young – and yet I’d imagine that it will age well enough too. In a word: spiffy. Rated : 93 Points Winefront.com.au
