John Duval Wines - Premium Wine Offer
March 2012

John Duval

I am also proud to introduce John Duval's first white wine, the Rhone inspired, Plexus Blanc, an inspired blend of Rhone varieties, Marsanne, Viognier and Roussanne, with the elegant fruit speaking, in front of a touch of barrel ferment characters, brilliant wine, very limited quantities, unfortunately.

However, albeit in limited quantities, I also have available some 6 packs of each wine, including a couple of packs of the super rare John Duval the Eligo Shiraz ... most unusual!

John Duval is a name that wine lovers the world round are familiar with. Having been, for 20 years or more, the man responsible for Penfolds wines, all the way up to Penfolds Grange, its safe to think that here is a man who knows Shiraz! He also know the Barossa Valley, and the very best sites for growing this wine style. Indeed, his extensive contacts with grape growers and vineyard owners assures him of access to some for the finest Shiraz fruit available in the Barossa Valley, including lots of fruit that used to make its way into Grange!

John Duval is one of the world's best known winemakers coming from a family that boasts four generations of South Australian vignerons. He has been saluted many times on the world stage, notably

International Winemaker of the Year 1989 and twice Red Winemaker of the Year in 1991 and 2000. Toward the end of 2002, John retired from Southcorp after a distinguished career of 28 years, including 16 years as Chief Winemaker for Penfolds. John embarked on the development of his own label in 2003 using old vine Barossa Valley fruit and has created three stunning wines that reflect the terroir of the Barossa and the hand crafted attention of John Duval.

Duval wines released their first ever wine following that, their Stylish GSM blend, the Plexus, the authentic and authoritative Barossan blend. What an introduction that was! The next year they released their first 100% Barossa Shiraz,the Entity. What magnificent wines those were, very highly regarded, and very very quick to sell out! This was followed up by the release of the 2005, 2006's, 2007's, of course, adding to what is developing as one of the best, continuous collections of Barossa Valley reds available. if anything, better again. These wines really established Duval Wines as a Barossa Valley producer of the highest possible order!

Since then, in the vintages where the quality is high enough, John Duval has added his Super Premium Shiraz, only made when vintage conditions, fruit, and wine quality are incredibly high, is the Eligo Shiraz ... John Duval's version of Grange, I suppose?

We are now proud to announce the release of their latest wines, the 2009 vintage of the Plexus, plus the2010 vintage of the Entity Shiraz! We are also pleased to be able to offer (tiny) quantities of the super premium Eligo Shiraz, a cult classic in the making

2009 was a very interesting vintage in the Barossa Valley, 2010 a simply outstanding vintage, the best of the recent run of vintages, and an excellent vintage which has produced wines of great intensity and individuality in style, but with structure and great balance. These are powerful and intense wines of great personality!

As ever, very limited availability given small stocks and world wide demand.

John Duval is one of the world's best known winemakers coming from a family that boasts four generations of South Australian vignerons.  He has been saluted many times on the world stage, notably International Winemaker of the Year 1989 and twice Red Winemaker of the Year in 1991 and 2000.  Toward the end of 2002, John retired from Southcorp after a distinguished career of 28 years, including 16 years as Chief Winemaker for Penfolds.  John embarked on the development of his own label in 2003 using old vine Barossa Valley fruit and has created two stunning wines that reflect the terroir of the Barossa and the hand crafted attention of John Duval.

John Duval is an internationally recognised winemaker, having been the custodian of Penfolds Grange for almost 30 years as part of his role as chief red winemaker at Penfolds. He remains involved with Penfolds as a consultant, but these days is concentrating on establishing his own brand, and providing consultancy services to other clients in various parts of the world. On the principle 'if not broken, don't fix', he is basing his business on shiraz and shiraz blends from old-vine vineyards in the Barossa Valley. The brand name Plexus, incidentally, denotes a network in an animal body that combines elements into a coherent structure James Halliday 5 star producer.

from John Duval, about the vintage releases. - My early excitement about the 2009 vintage has not waned. I have been putting trial blends together of Plexus and Entity before the final assembly of the wines in late August and they are both looking superb. In 2009 we had a very hot previntage January (in contrast to 2008) but the Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvèdre all have lovely purity of fruit and elegance. Entity will be right on style, Plexus will have the advantage of one of the best vintages for Grenache and Mourvèdre for many years...and I'm pleased to report that I will be bottling a 2009 Eligo.

Now that the 2010 reds have had time to show their potential in barrel, I am very excited about their quality. The very hot November weather led to low yields of the old vine Grenache and Mourvédre but
this resulted in very good concentration of flavour. Although blending and bottling will not happen until August I am predicting 2010 will be another excellent vintage for Plexus SGM.

 2010 Barossa Shiraz has also been universally acclaimed. It is obviously still early days - Entity and Eligo are expected to cellar for at least ten years - but the purity of fruit, structure and elegance is very encouraging. Again blending and bottling will take place late August/early September.

The Wines
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Masterful wines, from a master of the Barossa. Not at all in the syrupy, over the top Barossan style, but with great energy, sophistication, style and charisma. These are must have wines for lovers of Barossa style reds, but with real class, style and sophistication!
Special prices for 6 pack (or more) purchases, and these are 6 pack style wines, wines that are fabulous now, but cellar brilliantly.
First Time Available, the John Duval white, the superb Plexus Blanc. This is a southern Rhone inspired blend, aged and fermented partially in older oak, beautifully balanced, beautifully delineated and simply great drinking!
John Duval Wines Plexus Blanc 2011 $31.99 per bottle only $186.00 per 6 pack
Varieties: Marsanne 62%, Roussanne 26%, Viognier 12% 50% aged in fine grain French oak (with only 10% new oak) for 6 months,
The aim with Plexus MRV is to promote a vibrant expression of fruit aromas from the interaction of the three varieties; and on the palate, to build structure and texture, rather than just acid crispness. The nose has fresh, lifted aromas of stone fruit, honey suckle and citrus. This is a medium-bodied wine with flavors of mandarin, pear, fennel and Asian spice characters that finishes with lingering citrus notes and minimal acidity.
Attractive pale straw with lime tinge. Lifted aromas of stone fruits and citrus. Medium bodied with texture and mouth feel. Flavours of mandarin, pear and Asian spice. Finishes with citrus, minimal acidity.
John Duval Wines Plexus 2009 $36.99 per bottle only $200.00 per 6 pack
Shiraz 52%, Grenache 30%, Mourvedre 18% - Shiraz was sourced from vineyards in the Stockwell, Light Pass, Krondorf and Marananga regions. Grenache from old bush vines 50-60 years old from Stockwell, Light Pass and Krondorf regions. Mourvedre from old bush vines, the oldest over 100 years old, from the Light Pass and Krondorf regions
My aim with Plexus is to express the wide spectrum of red fruit flavours from Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre, but also provide structure with a seamless balance and long finish. A low percentage of new oak adds complexity rather than dominate the berry fruit. Traditional, low intervention winemaking techniques are employed with Plexus, allowing the wine to be approachable in its youth but also have great potential for improvement in the bottle, under good cellaring conditions, for at least 8-10 years. - John Duval
Deep crimson purple-red in colour. Fragrant spice nose, combining aromatic red fruits and savoury notes. A flavoursome compote of red and black fruits with a variety of spices. Youthful fine tannins balance the rich fruit intensity. Subtle oak adds to the structure and complexity.
Deep crimson. Aromatic red fruits are supported by vibrant plum. Earthy spice characters combine well with a touch of savoury oak. The palate is rich, round and full of concentrated, bright berry fruit supported by vibrant acidity and soft, ripe tannins. A touch of oak adds complexity to the long, layered finish
93 points Nick Stock, Good Wine Guide 2012- "
The 2009 Plexus leads with shiraz, then grenache and mourvèdre, and shows bright purple colour in the grass. The oak sits up a little on the nose, with sweet resiny accents ahead of dark plums, plenty of spice and some wild mountain herbs. A handy ball of smoothly ripened fruit on the palate, blue fruits and plums too, and some toasty oak adding richness to the finish. Best in a few years."
96 points -James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2012 "The crimson-purple hue puts the often insipid colour of Barossa Valley SGMs to shame; the fragrant bouquet and vibrant black cherry and plum fruit of the palate likewise; quality French oak has been used to maximum advantage. Screwcap."
5 stars - Ralph Kyte-Powell, The Age - Epicure -
"Still quite unevolved, this blend of Barossa shiraz, grenache and mourvedre offers subtle, savoury aromas of plum, spice, tobacco and earth. It blossoms in the mouth with deliciously round, supple fruit. Medium in body and well-concentrated, it has soft tannins and a long aftertaste."
95 points - Tony Love, taste.com.au, Top 100 Wines
"A shiraz-dominant blend with grenache and mourvedre adding their personalities to the group dynamic. This is a stunner, styled perfectly with intense blackberry fruits and a hint of meaty complexity, all carried by a superb textural line and a structure that envelops but doesn't overwhelm the palate. Beautiful. The 2010 also has arrived in shops."
95/100"Huon Hooke, The Sydney Morning Herald
- John Duval seems able to weave more detail and elegance into Barossa reds than most and this is an exemplary GSM style. Being shiraz-driven, it's darker and more powerfully structured than many of its genre, with dusty, earthy and savoury spice aromas, a hint of meatiness and subtle black fruits. Intense, deep and layered in the mouth, it has a lovely core of fruit sweetness and a clean, dry and very long finish. It's concentrated without being overdone and is not a Barossa blockbuster. Delicious. Drink now to 2025."
John Duval Wines Entity Shiraz 2010 $44.99 per bottle only $252.00 per 6 pack
My aim with Entity is to produce a wine true to the Barossa Valley, variety, and vintage. The more subtle French oak was chosen to compliment the ripe blackberry, blueberry fruit. Traditional, low intervention winemaking techniques were employed with Entity, allowing the wine to be approachable in its youth, but with ample structure and fruit depth to allow great potential for improvement in the bottle under good cellaring conditions, for at least 10 years. John Duval
Entity Shiraz is vinified under submerged cap in traditional, old open and small steel fermenters. Matured in a combination of new, two, three and four year old fine grain French and American oak hogsheads (300 litres). Some batches finished fermentation in new barrels.
Sourced from old vineyards in Krondorf and Light Pass, Marananga and Tanunda, a component of Eden Valley Shiraz has been included to maintain the elegance and purity of style. John Duval's objective with Entity is to construct a wine that's completely true to the grand old vineyards of the Barossa. Subtle French oak was chosen to compliment the ripe dark fruits. Traditional, low intervention winemaking techniques are employed, allowing the wine to be approachable in its youth, but with ample structure and depth of fruit to insure great potential for development
Dense ruby purple colour. Youthful dark fruits of blackberry and plum combine with a hint of mocha and savoury French oak. Showing excellent fruit richness, with ample tannin and acidity to balance. An excellent concentration of pure Barossa fruit, dark, long and rich, balanced by attractive ripe tannins and bright acidity, all supported by high quality French oak which adds structure and polish.
Dense ruby purple in colour. Lifted expressive blackberry, plum and blueberry fruit with hints of cedar and cloves. Youthful structure with good texture and mouthful. A core of black fruit is supported by fine tannins and savoury oak.
