This Field Street Shiraz is our first single vineyard estate grown Shiraz, sourced from the 9 ha of vineyard that surrounds our new cellar door on Olivers Rd. The original Shiraz plantings are 1970 and the vineyard faces west to the gulf of St Vincent. So in every sense this wine is already at the heart of the S.C. Pannell label.
From November 2012 to March 2013 the weather was very dry and warm in McLaren Vale. The Shiraz harvest commenced at the end of February and the vintage was quick and relatively short. The preceding winter in McLaren Vale was fortunately one of the wettest, providing good vineyard vigour during the growing season, good yields and intensely flavoured fruit.
Ample black fruits joined by red licorice, sarsparilla, toasted cumin and a gamey note of charcuterie spice. McLaren Vale generosity with plush texture and plenty of juicy, fruit richness. The finish is long and sustained, supported by ripe and firm tannins.
"This estate vineyard, planted '70, was acquired by SC Pannell in '14; matured in French oak (20% new). Wow. This isn't the trendy SC Pannell with aspirations to make light to medium-bodied reds for connoisseurs of fine things, but a throwback to Steve Pannell's days with Hardys (there is an explanation, but no space).
“I love this wine and I love drinking it. It's been stripped back fro the artifice of winemaking to express the breadth and purity of McLaren Vale shiraz. violets, a punnet of fresh berries. It's all about the fruit, medium to full, earthy, even, long and sometimes ethereal. drink now until 2026
