At first I couldn’t find the X-factor – and then, a couple of hours from opening, it really started to rumble. Time in the cellar should work wonders for this little beauty. Complex aromas, perfumed almost, inviting, beguiling, sweet but in a savory way, never tripping the fine line of stunning fullness and over extraction. Licorice, dark berries, herbs, spice, cherries and earth on the nose leads to more of the same on the palate, with depth, length and power in lovely balance. Oak plays its supporting role beautifully, with fine tannins and subtle acidity rounding out the palate. Well it’s become a bit of a star over the past six or seven years. Tannin tames with time though it still ripples and pulls throughout. Terrific length. Silky texture through the mouth – a wash of medium weight, understated sweetness of fruit and prickly, piquant oak. It’s a structured and built wine but harmonious and pleasing – very easy to drink but reveals its hand as a classy wine with seamlessness and compaction.
