  1. Yelland & Papps Devote Shiraz Rousanne 2011

Yelland & Papps Devote Shiraz Rousanne 2011
    $33.00

$35; 13.5% alcohol; screw cap; 94+ points Phillip White - THIS wine just stole my tattered heart.
My first taste of a Shiraz Roussanne blend came in the form of d’Arenberg’s The Wild Pixie 2008. This has an even larger Roussanne component of 15% and it’s actually the better wine  ...  Flagrantly floral and outrageously perfumed. Purple fruits, anise, pepper, raspberry and a whole cornucopia of other fragrances. The white grape influence is not only apparent on the nose but also the palate which is silky and slippery with fine, drying tannin. It’s a crazy ride but an enjoyable one just the same. If John Waters made a wine this would be it. 93 Very Good Wine Will Eat Itself

30% whole bunches were incorporated in the 10-day ferment, then taken to French oak (36% new) for 10 months; neither filtered nor fined; 14% Barossa Valley grenache; whole bunch fermentation. Yelland & Papps are certainly challenging the status quo, and doing so with great elan. This is awash with juicy red fruits, the finish bright and lively, rather than squashy; fruit, oak and acidity in absolute harmony.

Yelland & Papps Second Take Shiraz 2012
    $38.00

93 points - Philip White - ... . manufacture, then charging an extra fiver for making available the privilege of drinking her raw and unwritten. Get some mates and lovers round for dinner. Dob in and buy one each of these. Then bring three conventional favourites, pour ’em blind, and argue all night.
Deep, bright crimson-purple; the deeply-fruited bouquet leads into an immaculately balanced and structured medium- to full-bodied palate, with plum, black cherry and blackberry to the fore, quality oak and fine-grained tannins bringing up the finish. 95 points James Halliday

... right in the middle with imperceptibly nuttiness and taut, citrus fruit. This is one of them. The Twelfth Man is a gripping white from a winery that really specialises in red wines. It's very clever to nail all of the skills and that's without you turning to their little after dinner surprise at the end of this list!" Matthew Jukes, 100 Best Australian Wines 2013/14, May 2013

    Greywacke Wild Sauvignon

    Regular Price: $37.00

    Special Price: $35.99

    As low as: $34.00

Some old French oak, wild yeast, time on lees, funk. Not your usual NZ sauvignon blanc. Excellent intensity. A tonne of wild character. Gravel, tropical fruit, sweat, earth, thistles, orange peels, sulphur. Has a slippery smooth coating to it, but pulpy passionfruity acidity refuses to be calmed. So intense it almost hurts. Excellent lingering finish. Armed and dangerous style of sauvignon blanc. In-your-face but remarkable quality. Rated : 94 Points WInefront.com.au

95 points - "Armed with flavour and dangerously drinkable. Red and black berries, ground Asian spice, earth, aniseed and a quick kiss of cedary French oak. Puts on an impeccable performance. 95 points Drink to 2024." Campbell Mattinson, James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2015, 1 August 2014

.....Bright crimson-purple; has absorbed the oak while preserving the cassis fruits and softening the tannins; good length and balance. Drink to 2027." 94 points James Halliday, James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2015, 1 August 2014
..... Langhorne fruit exuberance, all blackberried and blueberried, but with grainy, smoky, gum leafy tannin keeping it firm and strict and proper. Full-bodied but not overdone. Sound, fruit-filled length. Oak as a complement but not in an overt and dominant manner. Will keep developing in the cellar over a good number of years. 93+ points Winefront

...... black Russian tomatoes steaming on the toast, dribbling beneath a shiny port and cream reduction, black pepper everywhere. This makes surrender a delight. It’s a third the price of a good Bandol, and a tiny fraction of the cost of that air ticket.
Be quick! Sublime in as many ways as I can think, and believe me, my sodden old brain has spread so wide it’s dribbling off the edges of the plate.

... lovely things, but chalk and cheese in style.  While this is Tim’s first straight Grenache under his own brand, we should approach with the respect due his Chateau Tanunda The Everest Old Bush Vine Grenache 2008, which won the International Wine Trade Fair trophy for being the World’s Best Single Estate Red Wine in London.  Welcome back aboard the Grenache train, Mister Smith!
.... typical light colour, and a touch of sweet confection that is entirely varietal in the Barossa Valley context; a plus is the focus preserved by the moderate alcohol, often missing in action. 93 points James Halliday
.... The flavours bounce around your mouth. It has a warmth but it has an elegance. Sweet at its core but only just. This is a terrific Oz grenache. Its best should be ahead of it. 93 points Winefront.com.au
