  1. Unico Zelo Nebbiolo Lunga 2013

    Unico Zelo Nebbiolo Lunga 2013

    Regular Price: $42.00

    Special Price: $41.00

    As low as: $38.50

Looks legit. Tannins for days with a crunchiness that builds to tightness. Smells of garrigue, dark dried fruit, pepper-and-clove with a hit of earthiness. Sour-sweet and amar0-like to taste, just-red cherry fruit flavours with savouriness, earth and game mixed in too.
It’s not elegant or svelte, but a wilder rush of nebbiolo that drags long in the palate and with wicked chew.
Exciting to drink, so to speak. 94 points Winefront.com.au

The use of 25% whole bunches in the fermentation of this wine provides a sappy cold tea aromatic lift that sits comfortably alongside fragrant red fruits and a suggestion of spicy oak; the palate reveals a muscular structure, with fine tannins and chalky acidity leading to a generously long finish; will reveal more suppleness and finesse with time in bottle. 92 points James Halliday

Distinctly peppery and stalky, vanilla and floral perfume, chocolate and black fruit – like a serious furrowed brow Pinot Noir! Medium to full bodied, pretty firm and tense in the mouth, not so slippery and seductive as previous releases; the blond has gone all librarian on us and means business. But let’s get down to business! Chocolate, vanilla and stalk with firm tannin on a long finish. Interesting. I like it. Stamp my card. 95 points Winefront.com.au

  2. Yelland & Papps Devote Shiraz Rousanne 2011

Yelland & Papps Devote Shiraz Rousanne 2011
    $33.00

$35; 13.5% alcohol; screw cap; 94+ points Phillip White - THIS wine just stole my tattered heart.
My first taste of a Shiraz Roussanne blend came in the form of d’Arenberg’s The Wild Pixie 2008. This has an even larger Roussanne component of 15% and it’s actually the better wine  ...  Flagrantly floral and outrageously perfumed. Purple fruits, anise, pepper, raspberry and a whole cornucopia of other fragrances. The white grape influence is not only apparent on the nose but also the palate which is silky and slippery with fine, drying tannin. It’s a crazy ride but an enjoyable one just the same. If John Waters made a wine this would be it. 93 Very Good Wine Will Eat Itself

30% whole bunches were incorporated in the 10-day ferment, then taken to French oak (36% new) for 10 months; neither filtered nor fined; 14% Barossa Valley grenache; whole bunch fermentation. Yelland & Papps are certainly challenging the status quo, and doing so with great elan. This is awash with juicy red fruits, the finish bright and lively, rather than squashy; fruit, oak and acidity in absolute harmony.

93 points - Philip White - ... . manufacture, then charging an extra fiver for making available the privilege of drinking her raw and unwritten. Get some mates and lovers round for dinner. Dob in and buy one each of these. Then bring three conventional favourites, pour ’em blind, and argue all night.
Deep, bright crimson-purple; the deeply-fruited bouquet leads into an immaculately balanced and structured medium- to full-bodied palate, with plum, black cherry and blackberry to the fore, quality oak and fine-grained tannins bringing up the finish. 95 points James Halliday

The 2012 vintage was very good, though I suspect I like the 2013 just a little bit more.
An almost pretty expression of Barossa Shiraz we have here. Violet, blue fruits, brown spices and sweet mint – maybe crushed fennel – almost licorice, with a touch of whole bunchy spice and stalky perfume – the oak dialed right back. Medium bodied, nutty, gentle chew of round tannin, almost silky feeling, with even unforced acidity and a playful tug of tannin on the finish to shape it up. We have a live one here, and unusually for a $20 Shiraz it deserves, nay demands, to be served in a big Shiraz glass.

... right in the middle with imperceptibly nuttiness and taut, citrus fruit. This is one of them. The Twelfth Man is a gripping white from a winery that really specialises in red wines. It's very clever to nail all of the skills and that's without you turning to their little after dinner surprise at the end of this list!" Matthew Jukes, 100 Best Australian Wines 2013/14, May 2013
