  1. Zalto Universal Glass 2 Stem Pack

Zalto Universal Glass 2 Stem Pack

    Regular Price: $65.00

    Special Price: $60.00

This glass is designed for full-bodied and powerful wines, with its shape allowing both the wine's depth and intensity to shine through, whilst still accentuating its underlying complexity and finesse.
Specially recommended for: Chardonnay, Chianti, Riesling and wines from the Wachau.

This glass is all about elegance and finesse, created from a single piece of mouth-blown glass from the lip of the bowl to the base of the stem. It has been hailed by wine lovers as the perfect Riesling glass, but is also particularly fine for Chardonnay, Chianti, and the Smaragd level wines of the Wachau region of Austria.

Bright plum red; the nose has a soft red fruit fragrance - there's a reference on the back label to 'pink marshmallow' which I think is great. Sappy, dry palate is framed with tannins - bitter, mouth-cleansing, proper tannins. Complement that with some cherry red fruit late juiciness and you've got frankly one utterly delicious, dry and savoury red. Those tannins are perhaps just a little too bitter, but gee it makes for a refreshing and vital one.
    Massive yes. Drink 2015-2025+. 18/20, 93/100
    Details: 12.6%, Screwcap, $27, Sample
Would I buy it? Yes. I'd need something meaty, but I'd smash a half bottle." Andrew Graham OzWineReview

“Chocolate sauce, floral perfume, crack of black pepper, berry compote, almost a sea spray character. ..... but is mercifully not sweet. Goes all dried herb perfume on the finish, with a chomp of tannin to bring it in tight. Gee, this is really very good.” - 94+pts Gary Walsh
"Tim Smith has this blend working far in his (and therefore drinkers') favour. It's become a house specialty. This is a rich, generous release, chock-a-block with ripe black berries, chocolatey oak, cracked pepper and assorted roasted nut flavours. It's dense but bright and spicy; it lifts from the glass but then sinks deep into all corners of the mouth. A standout." - 95pts James Halliday

..... The palate harmonises lively, lemon-like Pipers Brook acidity of finely poised structure with gentle fruit sweetness. Tyson Stelzer, Wine Taste Weekly, 30 December 2013 94 points
....the wine has a distinct blush-pink edge to the colour, and a volume of varietal fruit well above most gewurztraminers, including many of Pipers Brook Vineyard. Rose petal and spice aromas lead into a precocious display of tropical and crystallised cherry flavours on the palate. 96 points James Halliday

  2. West Cape Howe Great Southern Riesling 2014

West Cape Howe Great Southern Riesling 2014

“Sourced from Block 6 of the Langton Vineyard, picked over a period of weeks. Everything about the wine screams quality, and puts beyond doubt the ability of Great Southern to produce superb riesling when made with the skill evident here; intense varietal citrus blossom aromas and flavours, the acidity a strand of stainless steel wire running through and providing the structure for the endless finish.”

Channelling a German riesling mindset, this wine treads a tightrope-walker line between sweet and dry, begging the question almost of where the border is drawn. Here, it's just a lean towards the former, a lime sorbet feel with a faint note of green lime cordial, but edged with tempered acidity and a final sweet-sour tension. Intriguing, and suits not just the dessert course but also Thai entrees.

94 points - "One of the highest vineyards in the Clare Valley, at 480m. Classic dry Clare style, with lemon, lime and apple blossom aromas, the strongly structured palate followed suit with a base of chalky/minerally acidity. Wines such as this are world-class. Drink 2024." James Halliday, www.winecompanion.com.au, September 2014
"Family head Peter Barry is raving already about how the '14 rieslings are looking, and this lives up to the spruik, buzzing with fresh, tongue-tingling citrus cut, edgy lime-juice acidity, and fine talc and pithy minerals in the mouth feel. Drink now if you're tuned to the style or age for 10 years." Tony Love's Top 100 Wines, The Advertiser, 19 July 2014

This Riesling couldn't be anymore youthful - it's one of the first bottled 2015 South Australian whites I've had. It's already looking a treat too, water green in colour with aromatics that you can smell halfway across the room.
    Love that joyful fruit.
Underneath there is some post-ferment banana esters, a little peachy juiciness and then a very dry edge underneath. It's fruit, not acid, motivated, with a smashable combination of gooseberry and nectarine fruit without tipping into flab. Off-dry, though it never feels awfully sweet, a trick that should be commended.
Drink this young and savour the taste of delicious fruit (like I do).

    Details:11.5%, Screwcap, $25
Best drinking: 2015-2016 (though it will live for ages after that not necessarily get better)
    Score: 17.7/20, 92/100"
