"This one is the for the flint and mineral fans. Strong slate and graphite scents, lemon and apple underlying. The palate is racy, whipcracked with citrus/white flesh stone fruit, charged with that flinty mineral thing going on. Sheesh, it’s got some velocity too. In its style, it’s done brilliantly. A fancy racing car of a wine. Cellar long too.

"Just beautiful. This is chardonnay going for gold. It has plenty of oomph too; nothing wimpy here. Peaches, pears, grapefruit, nougat and cedarwood. Both variety and oak get a good unashamed workout. There you go. Quality, nailed."

  1. Luke Lambert Syrah 2018

    Luke Lambert Syrah 2018

    Regular Price: $37.50

Many people know I don’t go a bunch on Shiraz, or more precisely, I have quite specific needs. Luke Lambert is the Jim Clark of winemakers.
Neon purple, perfume, pepper, boysenberry, blackcurrant, honey biscuits. It’s light to medium-bodied, intense small berried black fruit, plenty of bunch and spice, highlight is ultra-pure mineral water acidity, fine chalky tannin, and a long crisp peppery finish. Wonderful delineation and expression of Shiraz. Often not for everyone, but works for me. And so often you are defined by what you don’t do.

Invariably interesting style of Chardonnay from LL. It’s a bit Yarra v Jura v Chablis, but for all that, very much its own thing. Without wanting to typecast, this is more a Mike Bennie style of Chardonnay than a Campbell Mattinson one. Subdued fruit, into lemon rind, citrus, green apple, aniseed, with nutty saline character. It’s savoury, a little kombucha or yoghourt sourness, intense acidity, fine chalk dust texture, and a long perfumed/sour-edged finish. It’s engaging and very good, though likely to polarise.

  3. Domaine Naturaliste Artus Chardonnay 2017

    Domaine Naturaliste Artus Chardonnay 2017

Artus is an artistic translation of our local Gin Gin clone into wine. It is a provocative, complex and textural wine exuding the seductive spirit of “old world” chardonnay. The vines have been managed to allow only dappled light into the fruiting zone. This promotes flavor development, low tannins and bright levels of natural acidity. The fruit is farmed in the cool southern end of Margaret River. The tiny 100g Gin Gin clusters are hand harvested at first light to preserve freshness of fruit. Flavours of fresh nectarines and candied pecan nuts are supported by aromas of poached pears and marzipan.

"Barossa Shiraz. No details but last year’s release came from vines with an average vine age of 20 years. .

A warm, supple shiraz. It’s one of those wines that just feels good as it flows through your mouth. It tastes of toast, ripe plum, clove, woodsy spices and dark, coal-like earth. It has a darkness, almost a tarriness, but it still boasts life and lift. Tannin too has been immaculately well handled; it’s seamless in the wine. Very nice wine. Perfect for a cool evening.  Rating: 93 Points The Wine Front (February 2019)

Fine, perfumed, the right amount of green apple and citrus zip, tingle of pitch-perfect acidity, citrus rind and a softening dab of oatmeal and sour yoghourt, maybe some green olive too, and a finish that’s tight, crisp, long and compelling. Subtle Chablis-like thing, and bloody good it is. More please, and thank you."

100% Nebbiolo. With neither single cru released in this vintage (a decision made some time back by Roberto and Enrico), fruit from all four of their crus has gone into this blend: Molsino, Valferana, Garavoglie and Casacce, ranging from 290-420 metres altitude. After gentle destemming and crushing, a 15-day fermentation/maceration in steel takes place, followed by a little over 3 years ageing in large Slavonian botti. The final stage is an additional 6-12 months in cement vats before releasing to the market. Bright red/cherry fruits, candied orange with hints of licorice and violet florals; textured and with exceptional structure, while the tingling acidity and focused tannins drive through to finish.
