Great wine gifts for all occasions
  1. Zalto Bordeaux Glass 2 Stem Pack

Zalto Bordeaux Glass 2 Stem Pack

    Regular Price: $130.00

    Special Price: $120.00

This work wonders on wines rich in structure and fruit concentration and for wines high in tannin. Broader-based than most 'Bordeaux' glass styles its unique design accentuates and brings harmony to a wine's potency, concentration, extract and tannins. While is comes particularly recommended for Bordeaux, Brunello di Montalcino, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz etc, it actually works brilliantly with Nebbiolo and Pinot, too. Don't let the name fool you into thinking this is a one-dimensional stem.

Pikes the Merle Reserve Riesling 2016

    Regular Price: $47.50

    Special Price: $45.50

    As low as: $45.00

It’s juicy and flavoursome, yet stony and firm too; the best of both worlds. Lime juice, lavender and aniseed perfume, pure acidity, superb line and length, with a lip-smacking quartz-like finish. It’s great now, and likely greater later."

    Garagiste Merricks Chardonnay 2015

    Regular Price: $45.00

    Special Price: $42.50

    As low as: $41.50

Australian chardonnay is in a great place; so too is the Garagiste range.

How powerful can a wine be before it loses its elegance? This tests the definition. It’s straw-coloured and powerfully flavoured and yet it floats and sings in harmony. It’s an elegant portrait of this wonderful white grape. It’s juicy with ripe nectarine and white peach, comes dripping with pear and fig, and cuts long with spicy, flinty, nutty goodness. There’s a rind-like character here, an extra bite to the flavour. It’s the icing on a gorgeous wine.

  1. Express Winemakers Tempranillo 2015

    Express Winemakers Tempranillo 2015

    Regular Price: $26.99

    Special Price: $26.50

    As low as: $25.00

Sourced from one of Plantagenet’s vineyards. There’s rumour that it is one of the original new wave tempranillo plantings of the variety in Australia, potentially. Planted 1999 or so.

Has some flesh, has lots of charm. Indeed, this is one of the great tempranillos of Australia. It’s packed with sinewy tannin, shrewd in dark fruit, coal and spice character through and through. Hugely aromatic, funk and wildness, a sip and it’s almost aggressive with you, yet it is deeply satisfying. No faking it’s worth or intent.

  2. Gaelic Cemetery Gaelic Cemetery Riesling 2016

Gaelic Cemetery Gaelic Cemetery Riesling 2016

    Regular Price: $39.50

    Special Price: $38.00

    As low as: $36.99

"I'm really liking the 2016 Rieslings from South Australia. This wine had been opened two days earlier (I’ve been away) and my wife reliably informs me that it’s much better now. I trust her judgement entirely. Girls are most often better at tasting wine than men, though they seem to lack the ‘Train Spotter’ gene which is responsible for the sometimes obsessive collector mentality found in many males. Offered as a broad generalisation/observation, of course.

Beautiful perfume here – blossoms, lime and green apple – leading into a lean yet curiously flavoursome palate featuring a fine acidity, and very appealing slate and brick dust texture. Super length, finishing with a real lemonade tang (the intensity of flavour meant here, rather than sweetness). Smashing."

  3. Norfolk Rise Shiraz 2015

    Norfolk Rise Shiraz 2015

    Regular Price: $18.50

    Special Price: $17.00

    As low as: $16.50

Norfolk Rise has most definitely pulled a rabbit out of a hat here. It’s a ripping wine. It’s savoury and herbal and all those good things, quite bunchy and stemmy you could say, but it’s also poured with pure, deep, ripe fruit, all plum-shot, spearminty, black cherried and meaty. It’s the kind of wine that just glides through the mouth, all satiny and sure, though the thing is: it’s also struck with smoky, spicy tannin, and a good deal of it. In short, you would never pick it as an $18 wine. It has all the characters and qualities of a $40+ wine. There’s little wonder it’s also caused a stir on the show circuit." 95 points Winefront.com.au

    Regular Price: $25.00

    Special Price: $23.00

A rich, dark and mellow Sicilian red with cherry and blueberry fruit, framed by cedar and gently spicy oak. Vibrant and juicy with good length.

No review available yet, below is the review of the previous vintage, the 2014! I think the 2015is better, but not yet reviewed.

"I picked up a bottle of this in a supermarket while on holiday. I’d not seen it before. It was one of those Japanese supermarkets where everything looked either exciting or frightening or both. Once spotted, I didn’t hesitate. Had no idea what an appropriate price is, or indeed what it’s quality would be like.

If you see this in a shop anywhere; clear them out. It’s a beautiful, intriguing, tangy, sweet-but-serious wine at a snip of a price. Buy a dozen. Buy two. It’s rusty and redcurrranty, redolent of ripe raspberries, fractionally herbal and chalky but lively, scented, structured, the kit and the caboodle. It’s light and it’s lovely. $20-ish? I’m in." Rated : 92 Points Winefront.com.au

  2. Garagiste Terre de Feu Pinot Noir 2014

Garagiste Terre de Feu Pinot Noir 2014

    Regular Price: $75.00

    Special Price: $68.99

    As low as: $65.00

Only 60 dozen produced. i.e. rare as hen’s teeth. The 2013 was a pearler. The 2014?

It’s even better. This is a magnificent pinot noir. I opened it late at night and immediately had to put it aside for the next day; it deserved better from me. This boasts the kind quality that makes you want to straighten your life out and be an improved person. It shines a light into you. It’s savoury, smoky, twiggy and powerful. It’s the earth risen up, the shirt of fruit torn open, the spice of life come to visit. It staggers with dryness, with herb, with smoke, a pathway of nutty oak branched between; but it slides with sour, ripe, succulent, satiny fruit.

Tannin spins a perfect web. It’s a spell that binds. It’s my kind of wine. It may not be yours. I don’t care. It’s what great wine does: it takes concerns and flings them into the fast-moving wind. Rated : 97 Points Winefront.com.au

Adelina Polish Hill River Riesling 2016

Subtle white flower/vanilla bean perfume, fennel, stones, and mixed citrus (including tangerine) leads you in to a wine of immediate appeal and character. It’s lean and kind of bony, but delivers a lovely crunch of citrus, zinging but fine acidity, and a fine talc-like texture, which lends a lovely grip to the wine. Yum. Will cellar surely, I’d imagine."

  1. Turkey Flat Shiraz 2014

    Turkey Flat Shiraz 2014

    Regular Price: $50.00

    Special Price: $48.50

    As low as: $46.00

The wine is a beacon for the Turkey Flat style. It has a deep colour and bright aromatics. The palate is unctuous and full of fruit whilst being supported by long tannins. The oak is delicately interwoven through the palate lifting and extending the natural elements of the wine. Cellar 15 years plus.

97 Points | "A Hero Of Barossa Shiraz" - James Halliday

All of the mainstream red winemaking options are used, demanding (and receiving) unrelenting attention to detail. This is a hero Barossa Valley shiraz, with great colour, profound complexity, yet retaining a calm personality within its array of primary, fresh flavours. Drink by: 2044  Halliday Wine Companion 2017 Edition.

This has utterly convincing varietal character, spiced black cherries allied with touches of charcuterie, the texture/mouthfeel with enough complexity to take it into the top echelon.
Other than Ashton Hills, this is as good as it gets in this neck of the woods.” – 96 Points & Special Value Wine James Halliday

Chaffey Bros Pax Aeterna Old Vine Grenache 2016

PAX AETERNA* {Eternal Peace} Single vineyard old (survivor) vine GrenacheNouveau style with 25% whole bunch. This is bare Barossa beauty. The grower, Kevin Schild, is the custodian of these 82 year-old vines from Light Pass, Northern Barossa (GPS coords: 34° 29'07" S 139° 00'57"). Unfixed & unfiltered. 467 Doz. made

Bang on. Both fresh and characterful. Not at all overdone – indeed it’s only light- to medium-weight – and yet there’s enough power to the fruit to make an impression. It’s made to be fresh and accessible and yet it pays homage to the age of the vines; it lets tension in through the front door. Sand, red and black cherry, graphite, cloves and rusty dry spices. A leathery, licoricey kick to the finish. Just enough tannin.
    Poise, presentation, the lot." &nb
