"Opens very stern, decidedly grunty in briar, dried herbs and wet earth scents, but unfurls majestically with time. Savoury, firm across the palate, revealing simple dark fruit characters, but settling into graphite, earth and wet stone-like minerality too. It's an exciting wine for tannin and strictness but also the layers of fruit impact. Finishes with a lick of gentle sweetness swept away by chalky pucker. So satisfying to see such structure and texture at this price point."

Well, if a rosé is made by such Burgundy royalty as DRC’s Aubert de Villaine and Dujac’s Jacques Seysses; a bloke sort of has to try it, hey? this is based on old vines Cinsault, a variety not known for its power and complexities, to add fragrance and zip to their reds. In this, the variety’s characteristic rosés, seem to appear not only in the aromatics, but also in a radiant rose pink colour. This is so textured, long and fresh and it plays out with a tingling backbone and a nice drying, savoury note at the end. This is worth finding. Don’t know if I’ve seen a better rosé... Aged in American white oak casks and finished for six months in premium seasoned Pinot Noir French oak barrels. This shows an abundance of citrus flavours, fruits of lemon and orange with a sweet, gentle layer of pepper and spice; a good point of difference for single malt lovers. 46.2% ABV

The perfume gives you a hint, in a way, with cinnamon and earth-dusted ripe red fruit character and a hint of dried herbs. Ripe and generous as the fruit is, it's a compelling drink, layered in flavour and generous without being overbearing. It finishes with a dusty lick of pucker and a tickle of briny acidity. It's lovely to drink, but structurally is quite loose-knit.

  2. Mike Press Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

    Mike Press Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Strong crimson hue; the estate-grown wine spent 12 months in French oak, emerging at the other end with the class and character one might expect to sell for $25 or more.
It is perfectly sculpted, the varietal expression nigh on perfect, the balance and length likewise. Fruit descriptors are essentially superfluous, if you like cabernet, you will love this wine. 95 points James Halliday Top 100 Wines

..... Indeed the quality of the fruit (and tannin) here is as good as I’ve seen it in Mike Press Shiraz. Cherries, cranberries, plums and a healthy serve of integrated ground spice. .......This is an excellent release, and terrific value. I suspect it would have been better again had different oak choices been made; but then, the end price may have been different too. 93 points Campbell Mattinson Winefront.com.au
....... the palate explores these themes in more detail (and depth), the tannins providing the framework for the examination.
In the end, you are left to wonder how the wine is the bargain it is.

The complexity here as a young wine is something to behold, and yet it’s all built on strong, straight rail lines of acid and tannin. It’s like an honest person with a rollicking tale to tell. You’ll never guess. Herbs, spice, dirt, dark and red cherries, licorice, sweetness and savouriness, caramelised meats, the smoke of barbecue. You can taste the earth baking, the fruit sitting pretty in the light. We might do this at thirty dollars in a fancy bottle. And hey, that’s how summer passed. When winter nights close in we’ll be borne back ceaselessly into it.

For my tastes, these are some of the best wines coming out of the Barossa. This wine, yes, though not specifically this wine, I’m talking about blends from older vineyards that see old (or no) oak, aren’t stuffed around with too much in the winery, and most importantly, are great to drink. So here’s Joshua, a blend of Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz.

Summer berry pudding, spice, flowers, chocolate and a little of that Barossa earth/coal providing the bass, as it were. Medium to full bodied, juicy burst of mixed berries (mainly red), fine dusting of chalky tannin, balanced acidity and a juicy fresh and cocoa laced finish.

A specifically grown and tailored blend. Small wonder it is one of the best selling roses on the market, its upgraded label print and branded clear glass bottle drawing the eye; it is supremely elegant, fresh and balanced, its red fruits sparkling like stars on a clear night - there is no static or distraction from its message.
95 points James Halliday Top 100 Wines

2014 Rosé - You'll love it - This is consistently one of my favourite rosés. Such a light and delicate style of wine, ironically from the home of big, rich powerful reds. It’s a multi-varietal blend, with a little dolcetto adding a lovely fragrant lift and a keen, persistently fine acid through the middle palate to the long finish. Finishes perfectly clean and dry. You’ll love it. 93/100 Ray Jordan
